[The Verge] Google denies altering YouTube code to break Microsoft Edge

Quote:
Bakita explains that “one of the reasons we [Microsoft] decided to end EdgeHTML was because Google kept making changes to its sites that broke other browsers, and we couldn’t keep up.” Bakita claims that Google added a “hidden empty div over YouTube videos” that affected Microsoft’s hardware acceleration for videos. “Prior to that, our fairly state-of-the-art video acceleration put us well ahead of Chrome on video playback time on battery, but almost the instant they broke things on YouTube, they started advertising Chrome’s dominance over Edge on video-watching battery life.”
The claims are surprising if they’re genuine, and they come months after a Mozilla program manager claimed a separate YouTube redesign made the site “5x slower in Firefox and Edge.” That incident led Edge, Safari, and Firefox users to revert to scripts to improve the YouTube experience. Google was also at the center of claims it intentionally blocked access to Google Maps for Windows Phone users years ago.

I think you have to be living under a rock to miss that google has been playing dirty like this for a long time now.

Well that’s the final (or another) result of Bill Gates' six pack analogy in the 1998 antitrust trial against MS. For the older posters who remember that trial and his six pack comment.

Quote:
Bill Gates contends that asking him to include Navigator with Windows is like asking Coca-Cola to include three cans of Pepsi in every six-pack.
https://www.cnet.com/news/a-coke-a-p...windows-shelf/

Now I'm not defending Gate's old argument and I was being sarcastic in my first paragraph anyway. Who knows what would've happened to Win OS if non MS browsers were not allowed in Win 10 or any Win OS.

That was for real? I did a reinstall and wanted to use MS Edge instead of installing a new browser, and Youtube was broken as all hell, so I begrudgingly installed Chrome.

In an ancient version of Google Stupidity, they used to replace chrome icon on the desktop after every time i removed it. I never installed google anything after that. I use Firefox. It's a stupid web browser. STAY A STUPID WEB BROWSER !

In the good old days, Chrome itself was uninstallable. Attempting to do so would usually break a system in such a way as to require a reinstall of either the browser or Windows if you wanted it to be back to normal.

Works fine for me in Edge. It's true though that Google loves to break stuff even on purpose. Edge was indeed faster and at the beginning even the only browser able to hardware accelerate most website videos especially YouTube VP9, 4k, 8k, ... then Firefox followed with adding HW accel. support and at the end Google finally bothered to update their Chrome to play their YouTube videos with HW acceleration. There are other issues with Chrome that they refuse to change back to old settings that worked and were user adjustable or fix by default. Still Chrome is popular among the general not very tech savvy users.

If there is one site that constantly breaks something due to it's changes, it's YouTube.

I for one am extatic that edge is going away, it causes nothing but issues for us in the enterprise, so many issues with so many applications that work fine with chrome. Bring on the msoft branded chromium.

I work in web development, and chrome dominance is definitely making my job easier. Chrome almost always does a much better job of implementing standards than other browsers, as well as have more predictable and stable behavior. I can't recall every having to write in a kludge for chrome, but I do it all the time for MS browsers.
