[Tweaktown] AMD Radeon VII:less than 5000 available

Interesting and no cutom cards!!

Quote:
Since the announcement I reached out to some industry contacts who said there will be "less than 5000" made. The same source said AMD is losing money on each card sold as they are, as I said before, just Radeon Instinct MI50 cards that are being re-purposed into 'new' Radeon VII cards.

Not surprising at all. AMD holding off because software is lagging behind for consumer benefit? Truth is, their hardware is simply not that great for gaming application. Compute performance is their way to please pro-sumer market (and the cryptocurrency mining industry) Even their benchmark uses intel CPU for comparison. I just wish PS5 and XBOX IIX would use Nvidia chips so we can all move on to ray tracing next year. Because without modern pavement, no one can drive sports car. No hardware, no incentive for software development, not the other way around.

What's the size of the market for that card at $699 with the FP64 cut off? Most people that wanted a gaming card with VRAM and above RTX 2080 performance already bought Titan XP , Titan X pascal, or GTX1080 Ti let alone the newer RTX 2080 Ti or RTX TITAN.

The only way that could make it compelling is above GTX Titan XP performance in pro DCC/media workloads that aren't accuracy/precision reliant (non engineering) such as Blender and Maya.

That's 3.5 million dollars. For AMD that is peanuts and if they are loosing money on top of that why did they bother? Eighty percent of people don't buy AMD and they will certainly not be incentivised by a $700 card that only matches a GTX 2080 for same price. If you want to get that 80% to flip over, now would have been the right time with the disastrous RTX launch, but AMD will fail again to take advantage of the situation with yet another disastrous pricey and illusive Vega launch.

I think UFDTech video made a good predict that quantity will be extremely limited and the card is as good as not released at all.

Oh well.

Uhhhh... no... The margins are tiny on this card, this is more so just an excuse to say they actually released something to the consumer market on the graphics front.

I said this a few days back, but it should have been obvious that they priced it high because there was so little of them to sell. There is even people here arguing it's value despite it being capped in compute, using way more power than the 2080, likely performing slightly worse (when reviews actually drop), and the 2080 was already one of the worst cards to ever come to market IMO lol. It will be easy to sell such a small number of cards with all of the AMD fandom.

It's basically a novelty graphics card.

The increased bandwidth should help at higher resolutions. The P100 outperforms the Titan X at 8K with less cores.

Considering how worthless the Nvidia guys have said this card is and how nobody will buy it, I'd guess 5k will be plenty of stock for people to find one to buy!

Loosing money in the sense that they cost more that this to make or in the sense that they could be sold for more money as a Pro card?
Either way I was hoping these were defective/cut versions so there would be enough of them for the price to go down. I can imagine 5k selling pretty fast even at $700. Could be wrong, maybe I'm over-estimating how many people are buying higher end GPUs? We'll see but it looks like I'll never get to own one for a good price. Shucks *kicks dirt*
