Be funny if AMD ends up implementing Ray Tracing better than Nvidia.

Looks like AMD will have hardware dedicated to ray tracing to match Nvidia. If this is true, RT will be the future...like it or not.

Like what, a low end FPGA chip connected to the GPU?

We have to transition to it sooner or later. It will be some sort of hybrid rendering for quite a while. And for the first couple of years, the traditional way is still going to be better in terms of visuals vs performance.

I don't think ray tracing should be a selling point at this time though... It's not as if it really helped nVidia either, so, it is a bit perplexing that AMD will implement it with Navi. Seems like wasted silicon, unless they know how to keep the price down.

Knowing AMD, I bet their RT will be more GPGPU/Compute based. I think it's unlikely AMD would have RT only core like Nvidia does. Time will tell.

RT was always the clear future. Once we get the right hardware, there would be almost no reason not to use it.

Anyone who thought RT was a fad is naive.

RT is the future. RTX is not.

AMD is making a bit of a teasing statement through AMD's Ruth Cotter, vice president of the Marketing and Investor Relations Department mentions that AMD will also be discussing raytracing at E3 next week.

Cotter on the topic:

"I'm not going to steal Lisa's thunder, but we'll share that with you. PCIe 4, GDDR6, other architectural features that we want to bring to that architecture that wants to be sustainable across multiple generations and we'll be good. And then in time obviously, we need to start talking about what our ray tracing strategy is moving forward and some other elements. -Ruth Cotter, AMD Senior Vice President

Underline, Bold and Italic for emphasis.

Translation to common English: discrete Navi that is being released next month is Navi 1.0, without ray tracing hardware, but with some possible optimizations à la Turing shaders (present in the 1660 Ti and below) that will slightly mitigate the performance impact for now, but will clearly be insufficient to claim any sort of proper accelerated support. The next Xbox, to be released in Q4 2020 will feature Navi 2.0, with hardware ray tracing support. The design is still not finalised and would obviously never be ready for deployment right now in discrete form.
