[NotebookCheck] Cold as ice: Intel sets its sights on AMD and NVIDIA with new Xe GPU details, official renders and a 2020 launch

Previously, we reported that hardware raytracing capable Xe GPUs are intended for data centres, which Intel China has confirmed. However, the Xe architecture will be used for consumer and commercial product lines, meaning that Intel is gunning for a slice of the desktop PC GPU market that AMD and NVIDIA currently dominate.

Intel China has released an official render of what looks like a desktop GPU too, finished in a metal shroud with ice-blue accents. The render shows that Intel is toying with the idea of a triple cooler, along with a metal backplate for additional heat dissipation. The GPU has three DisplayPorts too and one HDMI port, although we doubt that the former will conform to the newly announced 2.0 standard.
Hopefully it actually runs cool. Looking at the 2 eight pins it looks like it's going to be power hungry.

I really hope Intel can come through here.

On a completely superficial note, I've always loved the royal and ice blue color scheme. My system now is a Thermaltake Tower 900 with blue accents and lighting. Would be nice to have a video card to match. Those cards look great.

They have Raja Koduri and Jim Keller on this project and it's 10nm. I'm expecting it will definitely be around a 1080 Ti.

2021-2022 season is gonna be a great building year.

Intel are starting to look like amd of the bulldozer era, no innovation on cpu and trying to make gpus which no matter how good the drivers are ten years behind and everyone will just buy nvidia anyway.

Yet they have both of AMD's previous engineers. The one who made Navi and the other who helped making Zen.

They also announced multiple tiny PC form factors and were able to scale their monolithic CPU to 28 cores within 2 years.

I like how people think anyone could steer a behemoth like Intel or design a CPU from the ground up in just one year.

Or one and half in a company that sucked hardcore at making GPUs.

It's far fetched for a massive company with billions of dollars in assets and already existing infrastructure could put out a GPU in 1.5 years?

heck, Space-X had rockets going into orbit 6 years after the company was created.

If we totally disregard history, then yes.

This is the company that missed the mobile train and failed to join later making full use of all those billions with the contra revenue. And there was way more at stake back then.

And the USSR did it over half a century ago. What's your point?
