Quote:
The Wall Street Journal reported the plan Friday, citing unidentified people familiar with the move. Apple issued a statement saying the new Mac Pro will be designed and engineered in California, but wouldn’t say where it will be assembled.

Considering the base model comes with a W-3223, 32GB DDR4, Radeon Pro 580X, I'm going to say no, the clone won't be 80% cheaper. The hardware I listed alone is 20% of what it costs. That doesn't include the SSD, case, motherboard, power supply, keyboard and mouse.

It's also not a laptop.

If an alternative to a Mac Pro is a PC with two 2080Tis, you're looking at completely the wrong type of computer

How about a PC based platform using the same W-3223 with a QUADRO RTX 6000? You might have to spend an extra $1,000 or so (depending on your other component choices), but wouldn't you end up with a lot more umpff?

...playin' the lead roll in a dwerg tossing contest.

Apple doesn't pay MSRP to it's vendors, neither does any OEM with volume pricing.

Considering the much cheaper equivalent Intel Xeon W options on PC, never mind Apple's latest '$1000 -1' monitor stand, this seems genuinely tone-deaf...as to design, pls see Sir John Ivy...

So Apple cannot afford to build a 6K~45K PC in the US?

The closest equivalent to the Mac Pro, at least from Dell (W-2145, 32GB RAM, Radeon Pro WX 5100, 256GB NVMe SSD) costs $6200, I'm going say something like that is going to be quite a bit more than an extra $1000. In fact, the Dell does let you configure a Quadro RTX 6000 into that but that will push the price up to $9680. You could argue that you could build it yourself and save money, but the target market for both the Mac Pro and this Dell don't build computers themselves. These computers are workstations. Not facebook machines or gaming desktops.
