I seriously think it has the potential to be great. But it's so early days, I don't see the point of paying a premium for it.

If Nvidia offered a non-raytracing lineup of cards for same prices, it would be great. They kinda do, sorta, but pricing is out of whack.

MCM delivers a 41% cost reduction. They even said it themselves that of they went with a monolithic design it would of brought performance down and increase cost.

Vega Frontier Edition $999 Vega Frontier Edition LC $1499. $500 for a garbage AIO = greed.

That's not the whole part of the story
The Vega 64LC for example, which costs actually quite a bit more then the normal one - had a better die with a different bios
(taking into consideration the cost push for the AIO over the normal 64)
It genuinely was a better card to OC where people bought it only because of the die and put their own custom plates on

But you are right on the "special edition" price push
We can just look at the 50th Anniversary Ryzen or Radeon 7 gpu
no changes, no binning - nothing , but higher cost

The Radeon VII cost more because it's compute performance and FP64 performance. I am one of the owners of the Vega 64 LC at launch date which only cost $100 more than a Vega 64($599) Limited Edition. Not $500.

I have the highest 3DMark GPU score for a Vega 64.

The Radeon VII anniversary edition didn't cost any extra compared to the Radeon VII($699)

The Vega FE and Vega FE LC had a $500 difference for the garbage AIO.
The Vega 64 LE and Vega 64 LC had a $100 difference for the garbage AIO.

Granted, it's the Motley Fool, but it looks like early (sales) numbers are starting to come in:

(MF, by way of Yahoo): AMD Leapfrogs NVIDIA for the First Time in Years

Quote:
NVIDIA shot itself in the foot

AMD is competitive again in the graphics card market because NVIDIA pushed its prices too high. Even after a de facto price cut via its SUPER product refresh, AMD was able to match NVIDIA on price while beating it on performance.

on the road to knowhere, having jaba at someplace;
pondering quantum physics through the lint in someone's bellybutton.

Gamers need to stop writing news articles or indicate they are referring to gaming since the Radeon VII is a bargain for other task.

Quote:
There is one unexpected side effect of this launch: AMD's highest-end graphics card, the Radeon VII, has been rendered largely irrelevant. Launched earlier this year and based on an older architecture, the $699 Radeon VII wasn't a particularly good product to begin with. It's now an even worse deal, beating the RX 5700 XT by just 3.8% on performance while costing a whopping 70% more.

The garbage AIO still better than the stock cooler. Also LC and 50th 5700 XT are the best parts. They are binned. R7 was not binned for the anniversary.

Again AMD showed the garbage AIO and binning of their cards aren't worth $500 when they released the Vega 64 LE and Vega 64 LC for only a $100 difference. A few months after the Vega FE LC went on sale for $870 at BHPhoto a few months after the Vega 64 release. AMD can be greedy as any other company.

I'm not complaining about a $50-$100 difference of binned parts but $500 is outrageous when the same difference is being sold at $100 on their other part.
