[Tom's Hardware] AMD Flute SoC Rumored for Xbox Project Scarlett Sees First Leak

Source: https://www.tomshardware.com/news/am...eak,40000.html

*Specifications in the table are unconfirmed

AMD Flute is an eight-core, 16-thread processor, that seemingly comes with 1.6 GHz base clock speed and a 3.2 GHz boost clock. There is no official information on whether AMD Flute is based on the Zen, Zen+ or Zen 2 microarchitectures. Microsoft has previously stated that Project Scarlett uses a Zen 2 processor.

The AMD Flute sample features the 13F9 PCIe ID, which alludes to the Navi 10 Lite silicon. As we've recently seen in a Linux display driver, there are a couple of Navi 10 Lite variants in the wild. The AMD Gonzalo qualification sample has the 13F8 PCIe ID and purportedly runs with a 1.8 GHz iGPU (integrated graphics processing unit) clock. Unfortunately, the UserBenchmark entry didn't list the iGPU speed for the AMD Flute part before it was removed.

I am really hoping for a minimum of 2GHz base speed Zen2 CPU cores for the next consoles. Get some significant extra frame crunching muscle in there over last gen.

Probably going to have a really low default speed with a pretty good boost clock for power saving reasons.

Really interested to see what this next gen brings us. Starting to get pretty bored of dx11 graphics with low CPU demand. Time for something new!

too bad we won't be seeing this chip in a laptop.
if those consoles could be had for $500, a laptop with this chip should be less than $1000.

Do you think there's some sort exclusivity deal with sony/ms? I thought we would've seen a big apu for the dt or laptop market well before now.

they probably do, otherwise we'd already have Scorpio SoC in laptops.

I'd wager yes. Both console producers might want an exclusive chip that sets their console aside from the other.

Anyways, if these rumors are true these chips would be a pretty beefy chip for a console. Though just judging by that table, which really doesn't show a lot, they appear to be similar in power so far.

Go Gators!

Agreed 100%. Its very sad that for the most part, mainstream mobile computing is still maxing out at 4cores/8threads. I would have atleast thought 6c/12t would be common in the top of range variants (Alienware, Dell Prescision, ASUS ROG, HP Omen, Gigabyte Auros etc.).

When looking at a specialty cpu like in this case, is it safe to assume that the base clock is the max frequency for stressed across all threads and the boost frequency is single threaded?

I think you have to look at the base clock as a power/heat savings thing. They get left on all the time in a lot of houses and many people use them for media, the boost will be for gaming and the base will be for everything else. I wouldn't be surprised if they did per core clocks and have one or two of them that always stay low to run the os and background stuff.

I thought laptops (not desktop replacements) had 6/12 processors for a little while now? I'm not sure why AMD hasn't made a higher core count apu, I assumed it had something to do with packaging.
