12nm is actually less worth it. You get less chips per wafer and manufacturing overall cost the same.
not quite, TSMC isn't exactly that much smaller to compensate the increased cost.
Intel's 10nm transistors for example is physically smaller than TSMC's 7nm transistors.

the main reason why 7nm is technically more cost effective is because they can increase their production output with the same amount of fabs.
so cost per unit may be higher but production volume is also higher.

Wonder if these would dethrone the Quadro P2000 for Plex or will and GPU with strong compute do that?

so are these very small x86 cores? are there any ball park estimates regarding performance? I would suspect that intel will take 3 4 generations for these to be competitive against AMD and NVIDIA

We'll see if their Xe GPUs are similar to Gen 11 graphics.

The igpu in the 3700u has 10 cores for every 8 in the Ice Lake U. And supposedly runs at 1400mhz vs around 1000mhz.

right? n yet they wanna come out swinging in the middle weight of next year.

it can't not be a total shartshow, n it's gonna be great.

Dangit. This has the handprints of Raja all over it with his love for only power of 2 configurations in the high end. We can expect a measly and underpowered 64 ROPs with this now too

Since P2000 isnt in production any longer and costs have gone way up, the RTX 4000 has already dethrones the P2000 for Plex use.

I really do hope this dedicated GPU from Intel uses the same QuickSync API and simply uses the whole GPU hardware instead. but even if Intel does make the cards able to use QS, they most likely will have the same or similar media fixed function section as the iGPUs so QuickSync wouldnt be significantly better. While it would be great if QS made use of all the main cores, I just dont see that happening since it would require a significant re-write to how QS is already designed. While CUDA and OpenCL use standard cores in compute mode, QuickSync has always used the fixed function media block for the majority of its power and that is the bottleneck in its capability, not the number of cores in the GPU. Thats why going from a 512 core iGPU to a 640 core iGPU of the next generation has the same performance in QUickSync, cause the QS area of the iGPU didnt get any bigger. So I just dont see Intel suddenly switching QS over to general compute cores instead, even as nice as that would be on a card with this many cores.

The one thing that worries me is Raja.
He did not do a good job at AMD and I have some doubts he will do a better job at INTEL.

It's kind of difficult to complete a job when your team is being pulled to work on other projects. Intel pretty much gave him the money and tools to finally build a GPU he wanted. It's not a surprise why left.

So far on paper Ice Lake GT2 has less cores, lower frequency and out performs the RX Vega 10 mobile GPU. We'll see how well it scales up. We might have a Navi competitor.

And Conroe the GPU Market--means they are doing what they did with the "Core" series CPU's, when they were getting manhandled by AMD's Athlon series chips, making a CPU that had double the IPC of the last Netburst chip (Pentium 4). Going from netburst to Conroe was Intel's biggest IPC leap from a process change in years, and nothing even now has been anywhere close to a 50% IPC increase. I'm not talking about clockspeed. IPC.

So Intel having a useful iGPU that is as slow as a GTX 560m in games, to suddenly having a discrete card that matches a 1080 would be pretty huge, if their drivers don't suck.
