And yet if you ask anyone whos only casually interested in computers, you still get "oh isn't intel better? intel is better, amd is bad, i hear that somewhere so its true".

If you get into big business, no one is willing to try AMD because Intel, as bad as it is these days, is the devil they know and that's a safer bet than an "unknown" AMD.

Any market that matters, intel still wins on sheer marketing and momentum. AMD is the obvious better choice across the board in 2019, but it just doesnt matter outside of the very narrow segment we enthusiasts reside in.

yes...

though it seems you're unaware of the intel chipset shortage earlier this year that lead to many many shops having to buy AMD books. IDK if it was a supplier shortage, or manufacturing shortage. but it happened, and I now have 200 amd laptops in the wild.

AMD sharted the bed for almost a decade. It's going to take awhile to repair that image.

luckily people are short sighted, and small minded. its quite easy to convince a shopper to go with a new amd over intel these days. You've just gotta tell em apple's doing it. (which is only partially true )

depending on the quality and competency of your help desk (the folks who end up deciding what hardware your corporation orders) AMD is likely already working its way in, with intel only being supplied when you need ultra travel friendly products. desktop replacements, and mini-PCs? We're slowly switching to all AMD as we cycle. Intel's flaws are pretty well known. We get emails about it constantly from our vendors. It's being used to push upgrades early by many corporate reboxers.

R.I.P. Zawarudo, may you OC angels' wings in heaven.
If something appears too good to be true, it probably is.

I have been able to specify amd or intel when I want a computer at work. Unless your referring only to backend stuff like servers.

I don't think we should count out Intel. They were way to ambitious with there 10nm plans and it cost them but I'm fairly confident they will come out swinging with their 7nm chips and AMD is going to need to keep their foot ont he gas to keep up. If we put things in perspective AMD is just now starting to actually beat intel in IPC and they are on a higher process node which shows how good Intels 14nm actually is. If they bring that same game to 7nm they are going to be the winner again unless AMD does something new. I hope they do but I agree with Wannabe that if AMD doesn't go for the throat we will end up with another k8 where it was great but they ran it into the ground.

Intel had an answer for K8 way before it was run down.

AMD will keep gaining momentum, but they'll be sure to spoke themselves a few times along the way.

It started with Zen so 2.5+ years. When Athlon 64 came out and Core 2 Duo came out it was ~ 2.5 years.

Zen and Zen+ didn't have the performance crown. AMD has only had it for 3 months in the desktop/server market and is claiming that that they'll capture the rest of the performance markets. We'll see if Zen 3 can take the mobile segment. Ocean Cove is going to be massive and from hearing Jim Keller it sounds as though it will be 30% faster than Ice Lake.
