[WCCF] NVidia next generation GPU codename HOPPER.

https://wccftech.com/nvidia-hopper-gpu-mcm-leaked/

This is what I kinda anticipated at the start once we realised RT Cores is just occupying too much die space. If we want RT and Razerisation all progress at the same time at a meaningful pace, MCM is the only way to go.

Just fyi, if GA104 contains 4096 cores with 128 RT Cores (or doubling RT core per SM from Turing), it will be a massive 410mm^2 die space even for EUV 7nm+. That is equivalent to 20B+ transistors.

RT just eat up so much of the valuable die space that MCM has to be the only option to see meaningful progress for RT gaming in future.

so one or two more monoliths, then mcm kicks in.

woot, i suppose?

The double entendre makes sense. They're trying to get ahead of Intel and AMD since they're familiar with MCM designs and also be the first to do it with GPUs.

Ampere is able to last one more gen as a monolithic giant chip, as the largest GA102 will be no more than 620mm^2 (hopefully, if not i will be very concern with the MSRP of these cards).

Still I cant comprehend how much the RT core is occupying in transistors count. A estimated 32 RT cores 1024 CUDA cores GPC has the almost the same amount of transistors as GM204 (2048 Cores). Which means the Tensor+RT cores is occupying as much space as the CUDA cores itself. we are really overpaying for RTX technology from 3000 series onward if you ask me.

I really would not mind to have "ray tracing cards" where the card only contain rt cores and stuff to connect with your main gpu, something that have been done with physx cards a while back. In such a way everyone would be able to decide for themselves if they want ray tracing or not, cards would definitely be cheaper due to that and rtx card would also be fairly cheap as it would just contain extra hardware meant for running it.

Wouldn't make business sense as Nvidia would then go from being number 1 discrete graphic solution provider to number 1 dedicate card provider for ray tracing (maybe). Not very different from Matrox.

#2 their debt is insane, even for a "diverse field" company. They cannot even afford to service the debt maintenance let alone make an actual dent in the debt itself. - Internet Stranger

it would be nice, for sure, but eventually they'd merge them together. Would there ever be a point where adding RT cores onto the board doesm't hamper "potential performance"? i have no clue.

What's the end game here? Eventually having a hybrid monster that can do both task sets equally well? Or will tensor cores take over the entire PCB space at some point in the future? I assume playing pre fully RT stuff would require emulation at that point? IDK, I missed out on most of the RT theory crafting stuff. Head in the sand FTW.
