I wonder if I can make it to Zen7 before my cpu can't do 4k60? I don't have any troubles now but the new consoles may change that. It almost pays to wait and see. Zen7 should be unbelievable. I might be able to skip ddr4 and ddr5.

I don't question these improvements, the 8 core ccx should help core to core latency and doubling the available L3 to whatever core needs it the most will help the ram latency deficit significantly. Also that L3 is a lot faster than my L4 and way faster than Intel tuned ram. Lower latency really helps instructions per second. But I would kick myself if I bought a Zen2 and it looked like junk (compared to new stuff) by the time my current chip needed upgrading to deliver my most desired performance requirement.

Very impressive stuff. I'm tempted to build again once the new stuff is announced (as it typically signals a price freefall for the last gen), but I'm also thinking it would be best to hang on to my 2950X until DDR5 is available. A 17% IPC increase coupled with a more refined """"""7nm"""""" process might push me into the buying new territory...

This is no small thing if true. That's a 64core chip at 225w with 17% IPC increase while dropping TDP by 55w. This will replace Intel in the data center if they cant rebound fast.

I built my current system with an eye on a possible "cheap" upgrade down the line. If the next gen Ryzen chips offer enough of an IPC/clock increase to be worth it, I can grab one of the mid-range CPUs, a new GPU, and maybe another 16GB RAM instead of replacing the whole thing.

I was eyeing these new threadrippers for a while now compared to intel's X299 and the news of Zen 3 sealed the deal for me. I picked up a 3960X & Zenith II Extreme with the plan to pick up a 32 core Zen 3 CPU next year to replace the 3960X. The only "problem" with my 3960X is that it only boosts up to 4.5Ghz with very little actual overclock headroom. 4.2Ghz PBO all core boosts with low thread boosts up to 4.5Ghz is the most I can get out of the chip and while the IPC is good, clock speeds are still a smidge behind intel, overclocked vs overclocked.

Zen 3 with the ~200Mhz uplift and the IPC gains really should top whatever HEDT intel has to offer in the next 2 years, maybe even 3. Plenty long enough to justify going to Threadripper for a generation.

Have you seen anything that suggests next gen will work on AM4?

I really hope AM4 is still used. Will buy an 8-core Zen 3 probably. But a 6-core should also be enough.

again, whoever's selling the most lanes for the least money come end of 2020 get's my CPU money for the next ~5 years. then it'll be back to Intel after their core replacement has gone thru a few cycles.

Lanes is very interesting question going forward. AMD has made HCC mainstream and is leading intel in process and IPC. Lanes is an area where Team Blue may be able to meaningfully fight back, especially as NAND continues to drop in price (and more 3DXpoint/optane?) but they’re going to need to change their institutional mindset to do so.

High end AM4 boards from all generations can handle everything that’s been thrown at them so far. Even some B450 products can use 3900X/3950X. There’s clearly room to play with.
