And I remember the discussions about the GK104 chip and if it was justified at $500 and I think the vast majority of us didn't care at the time, I know I didn't. God, that feels awful now.
Oh no, Many of us On the OLD overclock did care and we were vocal about it. The thing to remember is back them our community was massive so our cries were very easily damned and lost amongst the large crowd.
I waited till the GTX780 before I bought into Nvidia BS marketing.

Oh I know. I said it seemed like the vast majority didn't care though. I do remember plenty were vocal, but as you said, got washed over by the large crowd. For myself, I don't think I understood it all at the time like I do now.

Hey never thought of that. Back in the day it was always x50 and x60 Ti's.

Because games and the card manufacturers are no long supporting dual card configurations they probably have axed the x90 sku for dual cards and put it back in rotation. Technically the 780ti 980ti and 1080ti are x90 skus

Yeah, dual cards don't seem to be a thing for the consumer gaming market anymore as far as SLI is concerned. I mean sure you technically can, but there's really no point. Seems like there wouldn't be a point in reserving the x90 for a dual-GPU card anymore.

That's not a 4 digit card code though. AMD has royally messed up their naming pretty much with each GPU release lately, they can't decide and stick with one naming scheme, sometimes they use a sensible scheme for distraction and slides to monitor for leaks and then launch with entirely new naming again. AMD also used X2 after xx90 cards for dual GPU identification.

right, and it'll continue to not be a thing unless a "quick" and "easy" deployment method comes along... people think that might come in the form of NV's recent driver update. Shows good initial results.

really though, the future is MCM GPU.

How many cards with 4 digit codes in their name have you come across from AMD after the Rn 2xx series?

#2 their debt is insane, even for a "diverse field" company. They cannot even afford to service the debt maintenance let alone make an actual dent in the debt itself. - Internet Stranger

Just Navi. AMD really seems to have a hard time nailing down a consistent naming scheme generation to generation.

I mean let's just look at their top end cards generation to generation:

7970
7970 GHZ Edition
R9 290X
R9 Fury-X
RX 480
RX 580
RX Vega 64
Radeon VII
RX 5700 XT
