Ohh.. that's good - although the source is WCCF, it seems most likely that the launch of the Ampere cards is just around the corner.

If true that's a real anti-consumer move. Discontinue current gen does 2 things I think of offhand. 1. Drives prices up of current gen due to supply constraints. 2. Allows them to remove themselves from competition with themselves. Both of these things are anti consumer.

Inb4...I know its a sound (although shady) business decision, but I'm not part of that business. I am part of the consumers and therefore do not like when their decisions directly go against our interests. I almost feel like there should be a law against this type of thing.

*edit: This is only due to duopoly and monopolistic markets. I had to make this disclaimer as ppl weren't reading further

I remember when they EOLed Kepler and in a few months Maxwell came out. The 970 for $350 was pretty close to the 780ti for $700. Something like that would be pretty nice.

The law here is to vote with your wallet and buy a competitors product.

This is a normal move by any company they just don't go rubbing it into people's faces.
They are more than happy to make an artificial shortage to sell new cards at a hike.

"Ah you want new cards? But there are not enough *wink wink* pay more. Oh you're looking for last generation models at a lower price now new cards have launched? Tough luck bud we discontinued them so you can't get them."
So you want to look at 2nd hand market? Nah forget it, we dumped some cash and pulled a few strings to revive the mining craze factories to move our old stock people didn't want to buy.

Competition would put a quick stop to that. Some from Intel would be perfect albeit unlikely. Last 2 times I've bought main rig gaming cards there has been a mining boom and AMD were way overpriced.

It's not shady. It's what manufacturing does. You stop making the old models to allow production of new models. If you've ever looked to buy consumer electronics like head units for vehicles or home theater receivers around Feburary or early March you start to notice a lot of models going on backorder. They've stop producing them to make room for new models that usually release in April or May. No one wants to be stuck with old stock.
