Seems odd but im suspecting the 3000 rumors of them being power hungry to be true. Still some salt here though.

If the rumour of samsung 8nm is true nvidia might have to push a little harder as samsung 8nm is not as good as TSMC 7nm. However the cost saving and big fat juicy margin nvidia can keep who cares if they have to push the watts up.

Conversely, you can simply imagine that people who, for some very weird reason, cannot power a 300W graphics card will have the option to go for a mid-range model that is probably 6 or 8 pin fed. And, meanwhile, everyone else gets to enjoy a beast of a flagship.

More is better, etc. - that kind of thing.

Just like Fermi they beefed up compute performance. I find it strange that they were able to decrease the number of Tensor cores on the A100 by 32.5% compared to the V100 but increase the FP16 performance by 150%. These new Tensor cores are probably massive.

I did not know ppl were unable to power Fury X and older x2 cards w/o new 12pin interface. Well color me surprised.

I also didn't know 8=12. Color me just as surprised.

Assuming the article is providing truthful information, the power draw necessitates higher pin counts, but it can be fed from the PSU using standard connections - as in, no adoption hurdles.

So, what was your comment about, really?

Adoption rate....I'm pretty sure I mentioned that. Imagine all the questions and confusion. Remember the average person is not very smart. Look at all the dumb questions that get asked on here all the time.

I knew those 1600W PSUs are going to be put to the test.

I doubt we'll see anything crazy from nVidia. The PCIe version of the a100 only has a 250w TDP. If anything this is just to make it easier to install a GPU. This is all thanks to nVidia being cheap with the GTX 500 power components.

IF this is true, the card will come with the necessary cables. There's no adoption issues I'm seeing here, unless you have a non-modular PSU or something. If that's the sort of scenario you're implying, I suppose one would have to spend a little more on a new PSU; though I doubt people going for a $1000 something flagship would have a bottom tier PSU.

Regardless, this is all speculation, so I will only give it as much thought.
