Freezer' Burn Overclocking Competition

Welcome to the first annual Freezer’ Burn overclocking competition. The goal of this competition is to have fun with overclocking and create a fair environment where we can compete against each other.

For this competition we chose to focus the on an older, readily available, and inexpensive GPU for the 3D portion. It was a difficult choice since there are many older generation graphics cards that fit this profile. In the end we chose to use the Nvidia GTX 260. Because hard modding is encouraged we think this is the perfect option since they can be purchased used for less than the price of a sit down dinner.

Here at Overclock.net most users will appreciate the potential of overclocking for gaming and other productivity applications. The other side to overclocking is to push the hardware to the limits and find out what it's capable of...for no other reason than fun. In this competition we will be using old used hardware for the 3D portion. The hardware is intended to be extremely inexpensive so you can experiment and overclock it without worrying about damaging your daily rig.

Competition by itself is fun, but lets face it, it’s more interesting when there are awesome prizes to win! I am extremely happy to report that this competition is vendor supported with over $2400 of prizes with no less than 20 WINNERS!!

Competition Duration: See attachment at bottom

This competition was designed with the goal that everyone can participate and be competitive. Whether you are an experienced subzero overclocker or just starting and this is all new, you can learn and participate in a fair and even environment.
You will only be allowed to participate in one category, but you an change categories at any time. There will be 4 benchmarks in each category but only your top 3 will be scored. We encourage you to participate in all 4 stages. However, we wanted to add the option of dropping one score in case you have difficulties getting a score or there are other problems. It’s in your best interest to submit to all 4 stages. The benchmarks for this competition are as follows:

  • Processor is limited to 4 physical cores with 8 threads max
  • Processor cores cannot be disabled to artificially emulate a 4 core CPU
  • Processor is limited to 5003Mhz maximum frequency
  • The processor and graphics card cannot fall below 20 degrees C
  • The CPU is limited to 4 physical cores, 8 threads max
  • Processor cores cannot be disabled to artificially emulate a 4 core CPU
  • There are no cooling or frequency limits, all forms of cooling accepted. Popular ones include: Chilled Water, Phase Change, Dry Ice, Liquid Nitrogen

For each benchmark you wish to compete in, you will be required to submit a screenshot and a picture of the computer running the benchmark. Only screenshots with the valid competition wallpaper will be accepted.

Note: As of right now, embedding a spreadsheet is currently not working with the recent OCN transition vbulletin. Due to this inconvenience, scores will be updated once every week and we will post an image of the score spreadsheet instead of embedding the live spreadsheet. The OCN management staff is working on a solution but it's not likely to change during the duration of the competition.

The scoring is straightforward. You will be awarded points for your position and the points are tallied to make a combined total score. Please note, only your top three submissions, from the possible 4 submissions, will be totaled.

Tiebreaker In the event that there is a tie in the total score, the winner will be the user with the fastest GPUPI time.

Final Results (Tentative)

Simply put, we want as many people to participate and have fun as possible. Normally in competitions like this, the top winners are the only people who receive the prizes. We wanted to make sure many people had a chance of winning something so for this competition we will have 14 lucky draw prizes. At the end of the competition, we will host a raffle for all the participants (other than the ambient/extreme top 3 winners).

To be eligible for a lucky draw prize all you need to do is make one legal submission to any of the 4 stages. Even if you only managed to run Geekbench 4 for instance, we want you to be eligible for the lucky draw prizes too.

Please take a minute and thank the sponsors by simply going to their website. This seems like a small and meaningless thing, but it makes a big difference.

Thanks for reading and I hope you get involved! Everyone has a chance to win something, so even if you can only submit one score, its worth it just to be involved and get entered into the lucky draw prizes. On a personal level, I will definitely participate and make submissions. However, due to the fact that I and working with all the vendor sponsors, it would be a conflict of interest for me to win any prizes.

Have fun and keep it clean! I wish everyone the best of luck!!

Graphics Card Overclock Info

Overclocking Software and Voltage
I expect if you are here then you are familiar with common overclocking software such as MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision. Those common programs allow you to increase the graphics clocks and if you enable some options in the settings, most of the times you can increase the graphics voltage too. The publicly available software will have limitations and it’s entirely possible, with the right software, that you can increase your graphics card voltage beyond the normal range with software. Below is a list of some software that might allow more voltage for your card.

Afterburner Extreme: I cannot post the link because the copyright is reserved by Guru3D.com.
Here is a article talking about the piece of software you are looking for: LINK

Note: This software requires an old system date or it will not open (I usually change the bios date to 2010). The unlocked voltage will need to be enabled in the settings, perhaps kernel mode. This is likely to only work on one style of reference card, but it might be worth trying on your card if you are not going to do hard mods

Physical GPU Mods
If you are new to mods I have created a thread that will help you. Even if you have some experience but you need a refresh, its worth a read-through. The thread can be seen here: LINK
