ASUS PG279Q, TV over HDMI @ 1280x720?

I have my HDMI input to my PG279Q coming from my cable box via HDMI. Why am I getting 1280x720 and not 1080p? I thought 1080p was the standard broadcast format now for commercial television?

Broadcast and cable are 720p. Your cable streaming, if they provide it, will also be 720p. Really only way to get 1080p or 4k are to stream from Amazon, youtube, or some other streaming service.

So what resolution are television shows and modern anime filmed (recorded?) in? 1080p? Or 720p? Or 4k?

I imagine 4k, but they are broadcast at 720p. It is the content providers, not necessarily the cable provider.
