Can't decide between 2k and 4k gaming/mixed use

Hey all...Looking to upgrade my setup since I'm on my computer constantly these days with the stay at home orders...

I currently have a less than optimal machine for gaming... Dell xps 15 9560, i5 with the GTX 1050. I mostly play World of Tanks and some Kerbal Space Program..the occasional FPS. I'm getting more into photography and I eventually want to upgrade my laptop to an ASUS AMD setup with the new ryzen 4*** series. I used to have a desktop with an acer 1440p monitor capable of 75hz and it was amazing. Currently I'm just using my laptop screen which is just fine and I've been able to OC it to 65Hz. I have the FHD version too...

I'm looking to get a new monitor first then laptop down the road..assuming I don't lose my job in this economy... I figured it'd be better to upgrade the monitor now since its less of an investment at this point than a new laptop. I can't decide between 2k or 4k... I won't be gaming at 4k most likely with using a laptop, especially if I'm on a dell for now...but I'd like the extra PPI...but then I'm limited to 60hz with 4k... So I'm not entirely sure whether I should go for 1440p and 120hz or 4k and 60hz. 60hz doesn't really bother me but I have experienced 75hz and I do know the world of a difference just that little bump made...I can't imagine 120hz...

So I'm trying to decide between these two monitors:
1. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...&tag=coa_us-20
2. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...s_hdr_uhd.html

Looks like the LG screen wins out in most things except for refresh rate. Wondering if the 1440p would be enough eye candy for my needs even though it'd be a slight drop in PPI compared to my 15" FHD monitor I use now on my laptop...

I also picked up a nice 4k 60hz compatible usbc to DP cable in advance...hoping I can use this to drive the new monitor....

Thanks all!

Higher refresh rates is a much better gaming experience so stick with 1440P 144hz
4K on a 27 inch is too small you want at least a 30 inch for 4K

Just as a note the 1ms response time you see on IPS panels are pure marketing hype and they can only be that fast when put in their fastest overdrive modes and when they are put in that mode they look like garbage with ghosting so the 1ms is only the partial truth and in reality its more like 3-6ms if you dont want ghosting

I second the LG GL850 by the way

You definitely don't want to go 4K for gaming. The graphical horsepower required to game at high refresh rates at 4K is just so expensive. Especially with crossfire and SLI being neglected by developers nowadays.

My 1080Ti struggles to run a lot of games maxed out at 3440x1440 @100fps and that's not as bad as 4K.

FYI I should have said this up front but my budget is <$400... Hoping to keep it around $300 as much as possible. That ViewSonic was $299 before Corona...

I'll likely be gaming at 1080p with the added refresh rate..I'm just hoping to take advantage of the extra PPI I might get with 4k...so 120hz at 1440p would be better eh?

my 4K60 has become 99.99% movies & 2D since adding my 34 3440x1440p120.

only time I use it is when games have terrible FPS management. like AC:O runs like ass, always syncs to 60fps in cities. So, I just use my 4K.

as for 2D work, you've gotta learn to use windows snap features on any high res screen.

for your specific situation, running 4K out of that 1050 would be similar to self-torture. 120hz+1440P screen for sure.

Add me on Steam, same name

If something appears too good to be true, it probably is.
Best R0ach Quote of all time : TLDR: Haswell might be the last legit gaming platform unless mice get their own non-USB interface on some newer architecture.

Then why not get the 83 model? https://www.amazon.com/LG-27GL83A-B-.../dp/B07YGZL8XF

It's a very good monitor, too. It's got a similarly good coating and great response times for an IPS panel. In practice, it's the same monitor, but limited to an sRGB color gamut.

@Cakewalk_S - There is also another option you may not have known of if you are interested. You can purchase a drop in 1080P 120Hz panel for your laptop. I had the almost identical model Dell and did the panel upgrade from the factory 60Hz to the better 120Hz, loved it personally. Only cost me around $55 to do and because it's a direct swap it was painless and done in only a few minutes.

Decide on your PPI and choose then. I would take 16k if I could and use scaling but we ain't there yet.
