New Monitor Questions

I have had my current Dell U2713 monitor for 6 or so years. The specs are at:

https://www.dell.com/hr/business/p/dell-u2713h/pd

I am looking at getting a new monitor that is better for gaming, but am not sure what to look for. I play some FPS and will be getting the new flight sim game. I wanted to go a bit bigger, but not looking at the 40+ inch tv range. What should I be looking for that make for a good monitor? If I want to stay under 1K, what would features should I be willing to leave out in order to get others?

probably should figure out what kind of panel you want first. if you don't know then go somewhere where they have display units for you to look at in person.

In general, 32" IPS 1440p 144+Hz with adaptive sync and sRGB minimum. But since they still don't much make these everyone is stuck on 27" for 100+ Hz IPS at 1440p.
Of course if you only FPS game or love UI scaling in your OS to get acceptable font sizes for text then 27" fine.

For a flight sim.. I would grab a cheap 1440p IPS + a half decent VR headset.

How would you rate this one?

From what I have now, 165hz would be a nice upgrade from my 60hz panel today. I also was looking at:

but I am uncertain about how I would feel about a screen that wide for the price. I'll have to research the VR option for Flight Sim. It seems the best setup to see the full range is a triple monitor config, but the cost of monitors and the cost of GPUs to power it is going to be likely outside of my range.

The Ultrawide LG was what I was going to suggest if you have a hard cap at $1000. Hard to beat ultrawide and 144hz+ refresh rate and gsync/freesync. If you've never experienced these technologies, it really is a transformative experience.

The next step down would be something like this.

240hz + 1440P + GSYNC is the new benchmark for high refresh rate gaming.

Of course, you could splurge and get the 48" LG CX OLED and get everything, but those things are $1500 and big, so probably not for you.

I'll likely wait until after flight sim is released to see how it looks. Watching youtube videos, it seemed the ultra wide displays was a benefit to see outside the cockpit. I was looking at 3 smaller monitors, but the massive resolution that would need to drive that is going to add quite the GPU expense as well. I really liked the Samsung Odyssey 7 32" reviews and specs. A 48" TV would probably be too big for the room unfortunately.

Has anyone used the Dell SG3220DGF? 1440P at 165hz seems to be a pretty good upgrade from what I have today. There's a few other upgrades I need so I need to save money where I can to make the wife happy.

The elephant in the room when upgrading from a 1440p 60hz monitor like your Dell ... what graphics card are you going to be using ??

As far as flight sims go head trackers like trackIR tend to be better than wide monitors however I have the impression fs2020 will not have trackIR support at release (no VR support eother).

I am currently using an EVGA 1070, but I am planning to upgrade when new cards come out. I think an RX 5700XT is fine for most of what I want to do, but with new cards coming, but I'm not buying something new this close to next gen being released.
