OC advice on settings for i9-7900x and share yours 9900x are welcome too

Hi and thanks for reading and any help in advance
I'm really having fun "in a bad way" oc'ing with my new prime x299 deluxe
It really acts differently than my other "bent a pin on it" tuf Mark 2

Bios settings now for 4.5 seems good realbench stress test all went okay
Ai Overclocker Tuner Manual
BCLK 100.0000
All core 45
DDR4 3200
LLC Level 1 "forgot I had that changed for this test read out"

Manual mode 1.180v
Adaptive +
CPU cache 0.150v
Additional turbo 0.050

DRam cha, chd 1.35 actually shows 1.360v
DRam chc, chd 1.35 actually shows 1.344v

Here's the read out from HWinfo64 free shows during the testing
Anything look low or high ?
These settings don't really work for 4.6 tried 1.190 vcore but it also didn't do well :/

Might as well add a current air flow image too

I think it shouldnt make that much difference but why are you intaking air from the top too? You are already passing fresh air into the cpu radiator, but you are using 2x intakes + 2 front for a single exaust at end. It shouldnt make much difference i guess you are doing this for vrms? If so consider vrm block, you already have a custom loop

Edit
now i see you are already doing a custom block with vrms too right? nice

Hi,
Thanks yeah the top intake is a bit overkill
I was/ am going to flip the top rear as a exhaust soon just like the rear top fan is

It's really just like you said to give more air to the top of the mono block
I moved the fans slightly towards the back of the board to get behind the mono block every little bit helps on the x299 and space heater 7900xe's biggrin.gif

I'm trying same basic voltages and using by core usage now
Did pretty good at 4.7 on 4 cores
Got borked at 4.8 though and I'm restoring a system image :/
Tried before restore to crank vcore to 1.2 but still got a bsod system service exception tongue.gif

A few things that you could consider doing:

  • Overclocking the uncore (Skylake X will go somewhere between 3000 to 3200 MHz) - that's especially important if you game where communication between cores is a bottleneck (that's why Skylake X sometimes does worse than X99 CPUs despite having a stronger IPC and also why Ryzen doesn't do well in games without OCing the RAM - the Infinity Fabric is quite slow)
  • I would recommend making an AVX and AVX 512 offset, allowing for high clocks outside of games and lower clocks in gaming
  • You could also try reversing the fans - top exhaust and radiators exhaust has worked the best for me from my experience. YMMV and I cannot comment on each set up, but I have found that at times, having negative pressure has been good for temperatures. Just have a DataVac ready as dust tends to accumulate.

Be advised that past 1.2V, power begins to climb dramatically if you want to push harder. It's likely that you will have to delid if you want the most (which is risky, btw as you could accidentally destroy the CPU).

It all depends on if you want to push further or if you are happy. Also be advised that RealBench is more of a "game stable" OC than anything else - I would recommend something more stringent for "work" if you get what I mean.

Hi,
Thank you
I have already delided through silicon lottery a while back

I was noticing my uncore is a lot lower than a lot of other posters
Not at all sure how to increase it though
I did see a uncore offset I believe it was listing but had no idea what to enter the simple description was beyond my understanding it was just an entry not a multiple choice type of feature.

AVX offsets I have tried 1-1 and 2-2 on my mark2 and did okay but this board doesn't seem to really like them or at least this combination doesn't like them

I was really excited about skx but since I saw gaming results it really made me very sad. Since I have only space for a single computer I need the same for both work and play, I was really expecting to use a 7900k.

What really make games perform worse than coffee lake? Obviously freuqncy plays a role, but is mesh the source of all issues or the fact l3 is not inclusive?

Hi,
Well if I knew anything about mesh I'd say so biggrin.gif
Right now it seems tight lipped meaning no one wants to help out on it so far :/

I did some Blender rendering and it's okay on by core usage at 4 cores at 4.6 and the rest at 4.4
https://www.blender.org/download/demo-files/

On the BMW cpu render it made 3:00:57 which is 2 minutes faster than a another forums results using a 5.0 coffee lake 8700
With MS driver interferance it's a wonder how anything works poke.gif

Could be a BIOS bug.

Asus will have to update their BIOS. There were issues with AVX offsets on X299. I don't know if Asus has fixed theirs yet.

Communications in Skylake X is slower between cores.

Note how with the new Mesh topology used (as opposed to X99 which used ring topology as does Coffee Lake), latency goes up. The out of CCX latency is also why Ryzen (at least before overclocking the memory which also overclocks the Infinity Fabric) does worse at games as well. That is walso why overclocking the uncore in Skylake X is so important. It increases the speed of communications within cores.

Otherwise you end up with a decline in frame rate: https://www.pcper.com/reviews/Processors/Intel-Core-i9-7900X-10-core-Skylake-X-Processor-Review/1080p-Gaming-Performance-a

Unlike workstation applications, multithreaded games had threads that are dependent on each other. The core communication not the core IPC is botltenecking Skyalke X and Ryzen. The majority of workstation applications can be split into independent sub-tasks, which is why you see Ryzen (and to an extent Skylake X) stronger at workstation applications than X99, but weaker at games, despite Skylake having a superior IPC to Broadwell.

I can tell that Civilization 6 is not well optimized, while by contrast, Ashes is well optimized for many cores. Deus Ex in the image is clearly GPU bottlenecked.

HI,
Never know could be a bios bug :/
Although someone on a x99 thread posted he had issues on a Prime x99 deluxe board where usb 3.0 drivers were the cause for oc'ing issues over 4.5
Something about xHCI had to be disabled turning usb 3's into usb 2's
I saw a listing but it was not selectable to enable or disable to test.
