I'm pretty sure you want VT on as it affects how HT works. Other than that well done. These chips seem to be more stable with an odd multiplier so that would be why you struggled with 24x.

suggested a W series or X series (update your BIOS to support the 980x ) and the xeon set up will work. you can get you a fancy 6-core 12 thread for around 40-50$ if i'm not mistaken now. I personally have the X5675 OCed at 4.2Ghz and it's been super stable.

I own the P6X58D premium board. Ours is basically the same board.
So it's funny you said this. It's now summer here and I did the overclock in the winter. Didn't think about rising temps come summer. That and I had to move my office from the basement to the first floor.

Temps Rose by 5-6 idle, so I thought I'd take a look at the hsf and reseat it. Well in the process I dropped it and crushed a bunch of pins and it jostled some thermal paste off the CPU and into the socket. So my existing Mobo was an Asus p6x58d-e and an i7 950 cpu. I ended up getting an Asus p6x58d premium and a Xeon x5670 combo on eBay for 100 bucks shipped. I've already got that thing at 4.2 and it already runs much cooler than the 950. At idle the temps are all under 30, some drop below 20. Under prime95 they get to low/mid 70s. This is with the same hyper 212 Evo I had. I'm impressed and this will last me at least long enough to figure out how well the 3rd gen ryzens will perform and then it might be time for a new rig.

that really sucks but great news you got a combo for cheap.

runs super smooth at 4.2 and no hiccups hardly.
