Decided to lap my 5820k

So... I know lapping a cpu is generally frowned upon but I did it anyway. Decided last night to fix my horrid temps and lap my cpu(also new paste in the mail). On stock settings([email protected]) I would regularly hit 70c-80c while just gaming, Maybe a 40-50% load and would sit roughtly 45c-50c idle. These temps i have lived with since i've gotten the cpu(3ish years now). They are unacceptable for AIO cooling. I have a H110i v2 and i feel they were pretty unacceptable. So I lapped... Keep in mind I am currently using cheap no brand TIM right now(Kryonaut is in the mail ) and my idle temps are now 35c-40c and load temps are 62c Running Intel XTU Stress test.

My first time lapping a cpu and i am VERY happy with the results. Will be even happier when good TIM comes in im sure

Lapping isn't frowned upon. Nice delta though. 😃

Deliding gets huge gains but you can still lap a CPU and your heatsink for a few extra Cs. The last CPU I lapped was my Q6600 along with my Thermalright SI-128 and I got really good results.

Too lazy to do it for the gains gotten nowadays though

Still looks good. What grit did you go to?

I'm not sure you can blame the factory spreader for those initial temps.

I have a 5930k OC'd to 4.5GHz at 1.26V. My idle temps are ~38C and max around 80C w/o any lapping.

My bet would be more on you having a better TIM application, or better mounting pressure.

These are already soldered heatspreaders, so delidding is a pain and doesn't offer as many gains as with other CPUs.

Video of it running:

I Did also have alot of stained TIM on the IHS. So lapping that removed it(i never got an initial pic)

Heres an update since i received my Kryonaut. Load temps are back to 85c HOWEVER I am now overclocked to [email protected] stable. Before it was 85c load at stock 3.3ghz. If i had attempted to overclock over 3.9ghz before lapping/paste I would max out 102c and thermal throttle.

Hi,
Thermal paste is not all that different
Kryonaut wise noctua nt-h1 is a lot cheaper/ more product and within 1-2c of it and is usually also stocked in any tech store locally.
