i9 9820X Hit a Voltage/OC wall?

Hi all, I have successfully stability tested 4.5Ghz on all 10 cores with HT ON using 1.253v and this is right at the limit of what my Corsair H150i Pro with push pull fans, in a room with a 15c ambient can handle under AIDA64/Realbench/Prime95/HWBOT X265 testing.

To even last more than 15 seconds under stress load with 4.6+, I need to use over 1.31v and obviously I can't sustain testing due to exceeding thermal limits.

Would you say that its sensible to call this a day and live with the rock solid 4.5Ghz, or should I spend £500+ on a high end water loop with a 480 rad and see if I can go further with no guarantee that the chip will hold any higher?

The fact that I need such a large voltage increase to even launch AIDA64 and the likes, is this a sign that I have reached the sensible limit and im at the point where the required power/heat to acheive even 100Mhz more is just not worth it unless im a benchmarker with LN2 on hand?

Thanks

Impossible to answer that question for you. Are you CPU bound in the things you do? Then maybe.

Can't say I'd spend $500 on a few extra mhz, though.

Yeah, I have a large window open when stress testing since the temps are not indicative of real world and lowering the ambient helps run lengthy tests for stability.

Hottest core touches 89c under P95 SmallFFT at 4.5Ghz with 1.253v.

I'd wait for 3000 series or start a ThreadRipper build...though I'd wait on that too. Pushing past the wall is pretty silly unless you have the headroom to do so or you're doing it for fun.

Hi,
I'd expect a lot better even with an AIO with ambient like that
Lottery looser you should probably cut to the chase and rma it as thermally defective asap if still in seller window
Otherwise send it to Intel as defect 3 year warranty.

I keep thinking about my results with this chip....

When you think about it....

Ive got a 10 core chip with hyperthreading ON.

Running 4.5Ghz on all 10 cores, with NO AVX OFFSET, and its tested stable with every program going.

So in actual fact this is a great result, and I shouldn't be crying that I can't get 4.6Ghz.

When I look back at my last system from 2017.... With a 7900X I was running 4.7Ghz with 1.21v yes.... But I had an AVX Offset of -7 and -5..... This time everythings at 4.5 24/7.

Well.... 4.5Ghz on 10 cores with HT and no AVX offset?

I had a 7900X, not de-lidded, under a custom loop and could manage 4.7Ghz... But had -5 and -7 AVX2,512 offsets...

You telling me thats bad? I just can't get any more out of it as I seem to be at a voltage wall. 1.253 for 4.5Ghz. To even be 1 minute AVX stable at 4.6 I need 1.32v!

So my options would be:

Try for higher but use an AVX offset to keep AVX loads at 4.5Ghz.... But this is pointless and artifical given that loads of applications and games are starting to use AVX.

Upgrade to a mega custom loop set up in a new case with a 480 rad. But is this worth the cost for a few hundred Mhz. Probably not. I'd still be hoping that it could handle a 10 core at 1.35v or more.... It might not. I have a Corsair H150i with push pull fans at the moment and test with an ambient of 15c.
