8700k to 9700k or finish loop?

As the title states, looking for some opinions on swapping my 8700k for a 9700k before I go and buy a new block for lga115x and my R7, or if I should just go straight for finishing the loop and skip the CPU swap.

Currently my 8700k is not delidded, and basically its impossible to test an OC with the current air cooling config I have (likely to throttle with anything more than 1.25v). I would prefer not to go through the delidding process as I don't want to deal with potential mounting pressure issues, which is one of the two major advantages I see with a 9700k with stock solder (also hardware mitigations for security issues). Other primary questions/statements...

- Do the 9000 series cpus generally have better IMC's? (I do enjoy memory overclocking)
- Do the 9000 series typically require less voltage for similar frequencies? (haven't been able to find a good google doc with data like Ryzen CPUs).
- I'm primarily gaming and overclocking, with some benching here and there
- 9700k swap may give me time to put off building a loop (time I don't really have atm)
- I currently have everything I need for my loop excluding a cpu block and gpu block

8700K to 9700K is a sidegrade

Only difference between the 8000 and 9000 series is the soldered IHS, some Meltdown/Spectre hardware level "fixes," and slightly higher out of the box clocks as well as stripping HT from the i7.

Wait for the 7nm Ryzen CPUs.

Skip and finish the loop. Side grade and even weaker CPUs don't do much at 1440p or 4k. Save your money.

Is it worth cooling a non delidded 8700k with a custom loop though? Aren't temps still going to be rather awful @ 1.3v like 60-70c?

wouldn't it make more sense to try it and see? then if temps aren't where you'd like them ... then just delid?

buying a $400 CPU for little to no gains sounds kinda dumb.

I'd be spending $80-$100 after selling the 8700k. I'd either buy a delid kit or go the risky route and potentially nick the pcb with a razor. Then theres the issue of mounting pressure after it's delidded as sealing the IHS back on serves no purpose but to make using LM worse. It just doesn't seem worth the hassle when for $80ish cost difference after resale I don't have to worry about all that stuff.

Which is why I was asking to see if on average voltage req are generally lower on the 9000 series, as well as potentially better IMC on average.

Spending anything to go from an 8700K to a 9700K is silly.

The solder Intel uses is going to perform worse than liquid metal, not better. That's ignoring the fact you're hoping an 8 core SKU runs cooler than a 6 core SKU. If anything your temps are going to go up.

Like it was said earlier: 8700k ---> 9700k is a side grade and not really worth it. I would delid the cpu or get a 9900k. The 9900k has a better imc and binning than a 8700k without the need for delidding.
The heat output from a 9700k will be the same or less than a 8700k.
