How many out there still holding onto a 4790k?

First post in years...

I would imagine I am not alone. Still waiting for the right time to upgrade my PC as a whole unit

I've made some upgrades along the way, 1080, nvme SSD, and what not. But waiting for the right time to get a new CPU, MB, RAM.

Was really looking at the i9-10900k, but unsure. My system is still stable, and plays 2.5K with relative ease

I found an older photo of my rig, before some of the recent smaller changes I made. Anyways, enjoy

My 965 BE wants your i7-960 to get off his lawn

Disclaimer: the 965 does work (last I checked) but it's currently sitting in a closet "resting".

One way to extend the life of your aging CPU is to keep buying higher resolution monitors instead. At 4k, you'll be so graphics-card-limited even with a Titan RTX that a 5-7 year old CPU won't really show its bottlenecking!

...not really that useful an answer as I use several newer systems for work and play (including more modern setups ie sig rig link), but I'm still also rocking, to great satisfaction ,

a.) an oc'ed w-cooled 5GHz 3770K on an Asus Maximus V Extreme,
b.) an oc'ed w-cooled 4.8 GHz 4790K on an Asus Maximus Formula VI and
c.) an oc'ed w-cooled 4.8 GHz 6700K on a Gigabyte Z170 SOC Force

..old soldiers never die, they just march on, especially for 1080p HD gaming ;-)

I'm just now about to retire my 4790k. It's served me well. Just don't need 3 liquid cooled PCs in the house lol.

I've got an i7-960 rig still running, and my current is my 2600K. With the change in the type of work I do, I'm finding myself limited by the old chip, but it's still marching along.

With the virtualization I do for work, more cores is gonna be a necessity.

...been in the software biz for 20 years, thus more recent updated hardware for virtualization. But 2600K and up still have a place for non-critical work stuff such as file servers and back-ups, never mind ol' fav games (MDK2 anyone ?)

ive got a xeon e3 1231v3 which is real similar that goes hard man. had it oc to 4.0 for years, not much oc but best you could get outta locked multi.
back at stock 3.8 now though eventually got weird errors I thought coulda been related to usb not handling the fsb style oc

Not seeing how you're invalidating what I said.

Did you read the OP?

He's talking about playing at 2.5k which I'm guessing he means 1440p or ultrawide 1440p and how his old chip is fine for it.

What I said is entirely factual. If you want to play at high resolutions, cpu doesn't matter much as long as it's 4+ cores and semi recent.

Old cpus are actually going to be worse at 1080p gaming because at that resolution modern games will almost always be more cpu limited than graphics card limited.
