Wrong. That'd be "if I spent 230 usd more than 10600k costs", as the i5 is the baseline here.

It'd only be $230 more if the OP was originally considering the 10600k and already had the thought to spend the extra money on the 10700k. From what was written in the OP, the 10700k is the baseline.

Well in that case it might be worth considering. I would expect to have it for a few good years

There's diminishing returns when it comes to cores and threads with gaming. The i9-10900K is the best gaming CPU available, but I don't think it's worth the price premium over an i7-10700K unless you absolutely need the highest frame rate possible. I'd honestly rather step down to the i5-10600K and tweak the hell out of the system than step up to the i9-10900K. Regardless of the CPU choice, I would recommend dialing in the memory timings to maximize performance. The gaming performance isn't going to be too different in the immediate future. The i5 is good enough, but I tend to want better than "good enough" to get a little more life out of my systems. The i9-10900K would be excessive for me, but might be ideal for OP.

My personal view would be the 10700K as you are getting a 9900K at a significant discount of around $100 or £100. For gaming it is about as good as it gets with it being just fractions of the 10900K and with the 8 cores and 16threads you are covered on the gaming front for a fair few years and it is no slouch on the productivity side matching the 3700/3800 on the Ryzen side, give or take...10600K purely from a gaming perspective is a great CPU but for longevity the additional cores and threads of the 10700K just make it the better bet for me.

Also as I own a 10700K, it is an absolute beast of an overclocker with 5.1 stable at 1.3v, runs cooler due to the new skimmed and tim design and Z490 is ready for Rocket Lake and PCIe 4...
finally at the end of the day, you should be able to get a good deal on your 7700K setup and that will offset a fair amount of the cost as I did...Just my own thoughts...
