Why are 7700k CPUs going for $300-$400?

On Ebay, used ones are $300 and new are $400. That is the same price as the 10700k I just ordered, which has the same performance per core and double the cores!

Crazy, right? I paid $330 new at Microcenter in January 2017 and then I sold it on ebay October 2019 for $250 plus shipping. I lost about $100 but was able to use the crap out of the processor for 2.5 years. Seems like a good tradeoff to me!

Because that's what people are willing to pay for them.

Because intel artificially locks motherboards.
7700k is the fastest chip compatible with "old" LGA1151.

Because CPUs are basically locked to one motherboard generation, for a lot of people it is faster/easier to just swap a i5 for an i7 and not have to worry about doing a complete system rebuild just to get the latest and greatest. Time and energy are a currency also

Just sold mine for $257. I probably could have gotten more but this is my first ebay sale. Crazy. Guys, if you have a 7700k and were on the fence about upgrading, now is the time!
