Need help with overclocking an Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550

Hello.
I've recently purchased a new PSU for my PC and I've wanted to try overclocking my CPU to try and improve my pc's performance in games.
I've spent around a week preparing for it, and today when I tried to overclock it to 3.0Ghz on my base voltage (1.25000V) my pc didn't start and the settings reset to the old ones after I turned it back on.
I've tried using higher voltage, but it didn't change anything, the maximum I could reach was 2.90Ghz which I don't think is that much better than stock.

Does anyone know what I could do? I've seriously no idea what I could try at this point and looking up old forum posts and youtube videos isn't really helping that much

Here are my specs:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @2.83Ghz
Motherboard: Gigabyte G41M-ES2L
RAM 1: Kingston 2GB DDR2 400MHz
RAM 2: Kingston 4GB DDR2 400MHz
Cooler: Arctic Freezer 34
PSU: Cooler Master V850 850W 80+ Gold

Please tell me if I need to give anymore info, I'm still a complete newbie so I'm sorry if there's something missing here.

I had a Q6600 Kentsfield, I'm pretty sure the Yorkfield is somewhat similar. I would imagine that raising your FSB to increase CPU frequency is overclocking your RAM past it's capacity. On those chips, CPU and RAM OC's go hand in hand. It has been 13 years since, I had it and I honestly can't remember much.

This thread might help some. https://www.overclock.net/forum/5-in...550-4-ghz.html

Go look up any Core 2 Duo overclocking guide, it's literally same story. Just asking this barebone motherboard to handle Q9550 is asking A LOT.
