I am working to get a pair of Xeon X5677 into my 2009 Mac Pro, it is soldered. I have tried the torch and the iron and am having a terrible time, ruining them, I want to go another direction. Does anybody think it is feasible to mill off the heatsink? I know it is copper, so shouldn't be too tough, and I have the mill.
I assume I would cut the adhesive around the edge, as I have done before, and then just mill off the top, slow and steady, until I get to the solder.
What do you think?
