So if it works out $-wise, I'm going to build a new rig on another x299 OCF and a Skylake refresh, and replace Pharaoh with the current one.

Anybody know offhand if it is absolutely required to update BIOS to 1.60 to use a Skylake refresh CPU (99xx) on these boards? It sort of looks to me like I'd be better off staying with older BIOS revs with some of the quirks reported here in newer ones.
The board will boot with older bios' however to get the best performance/efficiency you need 1.60

Thanks for the replies, I'll go back through this thread again and refresh my memory of what people have reported about newer BIOS updates. Which hasn't been much good since the early days if I am remembering much at all.

I did see where an update on their site is said to improve the per core specific clock setting that a number of posters here reported got broken somewhere around 1.17. So maybe it is better.

I tested most of the BIOSes with my 9900X and they all work so pick whichever one works best for you and your chip

Oh my! A reply based on actual experience with this board and Skylake X Refresh processors!!! That's what I was secretly hoping for...

Thank you for that D-EJ915.

Main thing I was trying to avoid was being forced to run a BIOS that slows down performance due to Spectre/Meltdown remediations. In my research I've found that the Skylake X Refresh processors have the fix for some of the problems whereas original Skylake X (like 7940x) didn't, but others still require BIOS and/or OS/software to address.

I don't know without benchmarking how much a perf hit there would be anyway, but this rig won't ever be an ecommerce server or otherwise likely ever be exposed to the exploits. Yes I know there are javascripts floating around out there to trigger some of them but I am not going to live in fear over that, I run NoScript and other measures on my web browsers anyway. FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt) is for fanboys.

So I'm almost done getting the parts together, just figuring out some details on the fittings etc. for draining the loops and will be building a 9980XE using (grudgingly) the refurb OCF board Asrock sent me back to replace the one that died after lowering the cache voltage with their software utility. I guess I'll find out if it's a good board or not.
