Gigabyte z390 Gaming X + 9900K temperature woes!

Hey all,

Hope this hasn't been addressed some time recently and I've missed it - forgive me I'm new haha!

I've just built a pc consisting of (amongst other things) a 9900k, a gigabyte z390 gaming x mobo, a gammax rgb GT cooler (the shop who built it claimed the noctua I chose wouldn't fit in the case so we swapped it out. It's inside a corsair carbide 100r case, which is a little cramped but it's decently ventilated, and I don't think that's the issue anyway as I'll explain.

I'm basically having to run the CPU at 4.3-4.4 MAX on all cores in order to keep it below the throttling point of 110 for the "package" (each core gets to around 100). This is a little toasty from what I can gather, and was wondering if this is normal for either of these components? I know the 9900k is hot, but jesus. Completely stock it was throttling pretty heavily when it went in to turbo boost. I've even run a small fan blowing air with one side of the case open and thermals are nearly identical, so a bit lost as to what else I can do!

I'd originally intended on getting the 8700k for this build but the store didnt have it in despite saying so for 2 weeks so offered me a discount on the 9900k so I just went with that. It's stable-ish, haven't had any crashes since I've found a workable balance between heat and power.

Any tips appreciated as I'm not sure if I'm within my rights to ask the store *** is happening and hope they can solve it somehow.

Cheers,
James

never heard of that cooler so I Googled it.... you have this thing?

What's voltage? If it's on auto you're probably overvolting it since most Z390s tend to do that. Set it manually or set an offset to get it in the ~1.2v area if you're stock.

Where are you getting the 1.14v reading from? VID is not vCore and on a lot of boards vCore isn't accurate either. You need to look at the VR VOUT sensor if you have it.

It looks like an RGB 212. It's not a very good cooler, but you shouldn't be throttling and >100c at stock regardless.

If you're actually at 1.14v then either the cooler isn't mounted properly or something else is wrong. Even a 212 would be able to handle a 1.14v 9900K.

The cooler is the one reviewed here - it seems quite solid for a smallish cooler https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...er,4460-2.html

Here's a screenshot taken during a cinebench cpu test, test came back as around 1850 i think, so the cpu is performing not terribly by any stretch, but nowhere near the potential you would expect from this chip. especially since it was reaching max temp at such a low voltage...

Dear lord now it's making an intermittent high pitched sound exactly like this
when running xtu benchmark. turning off c states stopped this but im still unable to get anything above 4.2ghz without throttling. This isn't normal, right?

Hmm, so the cpu heatsink is not even warm to touch under full load with the cpu reporting 100+ temperatures. Interesting... Almost certainly a bad mounting of the cooler, right?

Ok the shop forgot to take the plastic off the cooler when they put it together lol. Getting 5ghz without much fuss capping at 90c, gonna run it at 4.9 to keep temps and fan noise down. Great, my cpu isn't a piece of ****.
