LGA 775 mobo overclocks

I have a core 2 duo and i want to make a small project with it.

but i dont know anything regarding hardware that far back.

I was wondering what are some things to look out for in hardware when ocing for that far back out?

can any motherboard and CPU OC from those days? or is it like current modern ones where only certain chipset and cpus can OC due to being locked?

I am looking at the ga-965p-s3. and wondering if thats a good mobo or not. (see 1 on craigslist)

I think the P45 are the best, but I could be wrong.
I just bought an Asus P5Q3 Deluxe with a

Back then it was mainly a FSB push for OC's, and I believe only extreme CPU's had unlocked multi's.
My Gigabyte EP45-UD3P was an amazing overclocker.
After about 3yrs it died by capacitor popping(prob too many suicide runs with a C2Q @ stupid voltages?maybe?lol)
Bought another and its still goin strong for about 8yrs?, great board!
I may have to put my loop on it for some more suicide runs while I delid my 9900k, I have never had my C2Q on water before o.O

P45 was pretty good for overclocking and like the poster above me mentioned, raising clocks was done via the FSB primarily. Some engineering sample processors did have an unlocked multiplier but this wasn't much of an advantage as the later G0 stepping Q6600's clocked much better anyway.

My record for a suicide run was 4 ghz on a Q6600 on my DFI Lanparty DK P35 board so give that a shot at trying to surpass.

I had a GA-965p-s3 mobo and it was on the lower end of mid range boards. You won't see more than a small overclock with this board.

I have the Xeon version of the C2Q Q6400 that was never relesed, only difference is a 10-15c higher thermal limit on the Xeon
G0 revision, 1.2125vid 2.13 GHz stock
did 3.2GHz @ 1.15vcore
3.8GHz @ 1.36vcore <--spent most of its life with tolerable fan noise
max stable 4.0GHz @ 1.48vcore 2x 120mm 220CFM Delta fans @ like 100db on an air cooler
max suicide runs 4.25GHZ @ alot of vcore... 1.55vcore? maybe 1.6lol

I also had a P5K-E that didn last long. I got almost the same stable OC but I could only suicide it @4.1GHz.... before it died... and it took out a stick of ram and 1of2 of my 7600GT's in SLI with it lol
Last night I killed my Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P.... wanted to do some suicede runs with watercooling and the northbridge block slipped out of my hand and cracked the NB core.. oops lol
