asus Sabertooth Z77 fans..

My old Sabertooth Z77 little 35mm "thermal cover" fans are obnoxiously loud.

Are they needed in order to keep the board cool? There seems to be an option to turn them off in the bios or simply unplug them.

Also, could i replace the 35mm with something like this: https://www.canadacomputers.com/prod...item_id=083236, or would the 40mm fan bracket be too big and not align?
