Motherboard recommendations i5 7600k

Hi. I've been having issues recently with a build I did a couple years back for my brother. It's a Gigabyte G1 Gaming 7 1151 motherboard, it's just going on 3 years old and just started acting up. First I thought it was RAM as it was only recognizing one stick. I tried new RAM but I'm still having issues. I was never able to overclock his i5 7600K Kaby Lake, just assumed it was luck of the draw with the CPU but gave up on that.

I have a previous version of the board myself, with a Skylake 6700k 1150 socket and I had really good luck with my overclock and it's still ticking more than 5 years later. It does occasional hang on boot but no big deal.

I'd like to figure out what my best option would be in the under $300 range (prefer closer to $200) for a new motherboard. I'd like to get a little overclock out of it. System is used for gaming, web design, office stuff, we surfing, etc. Otherwise the PC is pretty solid. Thanks in advance! I've previously built with Asus, MSI, Intel and Gigabyte boards... I'd be open to other brands though too.

get a 1600 AF or 3300X and a B450 Tomahawk Max if your budget is $200-$300, lol. don't buy a 1151 board unless you're buying used, with that budget it makes no sense.

Appreciate the feedback. I'm not saying I need to spend that much, just figured it would need to be at least $200 since that was the rough price of the board originally. The CPU and the rest of the PC works just fine. That Tomahawk Max is $115 and those CPU's are $160~198, so thats already at $315 ish at the top of the budget. I'd thought about a CPU and MOBO replacement but it's just 3 years old and meets his needs other than not working currently! I feel out of date as I've not been building lately, not sure how much of an upgrade that would be.

Your point there on a used board is a good idea. Might be able to pick up a solid board for cheap.

$119 for the 3300X

https://pcpartpicker.com/product/NvC...0-100000159box

1600 AF is OOS everywhere, so nevermind that recommendation. but the 2600 (which is what the 1600 AF basically is anyway before the scalpers ruined it) is $158.

if you're happy with the performance of your 7600K, then great, buy a used board for ~$70 on eBay. but if you're throwing $300 at fixing it then you're doing it wrong.

I think you're on to something. Could sell the old CPU for a little coin... and put the money into a significant upgrade. Good call. My mind just went to "fix it," but much has changed in ~3 years.

If I were to go with a 3700X, would you still recommend that B450 Tomahawk Max or something else? Assume my DDR-3200 would still be fine with this combo?
Thanks!

I know you meant the question for Pook, but I'll chime in and add that the B450 Tomahawk is really pretty good regardless of which CPU you pop into it. Funny enough the B450 Tomahawk is an upgrade over my X470 motherboard, and one I'd go to with my 3900X if I could find stock anywhere.

Hey guys, appreciate the input once again. My brother wants to stick with Intel, so he's selected an i5-9600k. I started a new thread as I'd like to figure out what the best Z390 motherboard options would be. Thanks!
