Does the black plate help with cooling or is it just for looks?

EVGA Claims
Helps reinforce the PCB, protects critical components and best of all, looks awesome!

Backplates don't help the cooling performance, but besides looking cool, they also increase the strength/rigidity of the card making it less prone to bending/warping. If you are thinking of getting one, i would get in contact with Dwood here on OCN. he can make you a nice and affordable custom one.

I got the EVGA backplate for my GTX670's and it didn't do anything for temps. I mostly got it for looks and to protect the back-side of the PCB since there are lots of little chips on there. smile.gif

+1 to that back plate is mostly for look. Because the backside of GPU pcb is what you see in a windowed case, it really helps to make look neat and clean.

I have EK gtx 680 water blocks and back plates on two GTX 670 FTWs. There are some spots of direct contact (looks like vrm related part) on the back plate via thermal pads. I guess it will provide at least some passive cooling on these spots. But it definitely won't affect your GPU/VRAM temps.

I have notice no temp difference but yes it will add more rigidity, cleaner looks.

Here is 1 of my 670 FTW's with a 670 back plate!

The problem is these back plates are designed for a stock air cooled card so the hardware does not transition directly over.I am using water blocks so i had to use the hardware provided by XSPC.I was not able to secure every mounting point down on the back plate but all mounting points on the water block are secure.

pretty much what was said, wont help with cooling, looks cool and may offer stronger support for the PCB. they really do look cool but not really needed with stock cooling.

Does this apply for 4gb cards as well with the memory chips on the back of the PCB? Would I need a backplate then
