Great, thanks! What about the thermal pads? Reviewer said that because of thicker pads the vrms do not get cooled too effectively. And are there any changes to backplates? Thanks!

The first quote from you here is from 11th of September, yet when I ordered my Alphacool NexXxoS GPX - ATI R9 280X M02 from Aquatuning on the 27th of September, I got sent the version with the very thick thermal pads (3mm).
Would´t this be an indication I was sent the older, unrefined and sub-par product?

Shouldn´t I have been made aware that this is an inferior product, and that they have been refined? Nothing in the description over at Aquatuning mentions anything about these things.

I feel like I´ve had the older version dumped on me just to get rid of old stock.


I am very, very disappointed. Especially since the GPX has leaked (more about that here) when the plastic plate cracked, where everything points to poor manufacturing being the culprit (over tightened screws through plastic into brass insert threads, and water pressure, it cracked in less than a month)


I have recieved parts (pump, res, and block) to replace the Eisberg today, and they will be installed this afternoon.
When this is done I can get a better Idea of how my (repaired) GPX block really performs..

Hi,

The 280X was one of the first GPX's meaning it maybe one of the one with the thicker pads however this is only a problem on a very small amount on M-atx /Itx boards as you have been running it I believe the fit would have been ok for you. Regarding the cover we can arrange to send you an official metal cover if you would like.

Look, the problem here is not that the card gets to fat (although I had to shave off a couple mm off my USB3 connector to my motherboard because of this)

It´s that the thick pads are used to cover for poor manufacturing, the machining of the block and backplate is not within acceptable tolerances, so the thicker pads are used in order for the block not to make contact with components on the PCB and short out. Right?

I mean it´s self-explanatory that the heat transfer through 3mm thermal pads will be significantly worse than the transfer of a pad of half that thickness, or 2/3rd´s. Right?

And especially if the 280X was one of the first GPX´s, this would be one in desperate need of a revision. Right?

Is there a new revision of the 280X M02 GPX? "All points have been addressed." And "They have revised it since then." would indicate so, I think.

The reason the pads are slightly thicker then normal is to account for the differing lengths of solder joints used on the back of the cards and over tightening of the back plate, that is what will touch and possibly short your card. it is better to have 1-2mm thicker thermal pads then a dead GPU.

You will also not notice any difference in temperature in a real world situation with thicker pads. There is no new versions of the 280 M02 quite simply because all customer who have brought have not encountered any issues.

Hi everyone. Been a reader of these forums for a while, but never posted. Thought its about time I changed that.

I have an MSI R9 390 which Im looking to use one of the alphacool GPX coolers on. Has anyone had experience with this particular card, and the performance improvement with this cooler?

just to add some thoughts on gpx

instructions how and where to apply pads should be better. Pictures are small and not that clear...

anyways overall as product it is really great. robust and cool really well.

My setup"
Fractal Design Define S
Fractal Design S36
i5 [email protected]
Gigabyte gtx 970

Fans + airflows
back and bottom 14cm fans (venturi 14 and corsair 14 white led) as intakes, 3x12cm venturi hf fans on rad as pull (from outside of rad pulling air from inside case out).

Temps with Fifa 15
CPU: 55, GPU: 53
when I was measuring temps of VRM and gpx cooler itself It was not exceeding 53C (thermometer was not best but even if difference was 10C it would be still good)

so really happy with it. With custom loop I think temps will be better by 5-10C

Sadly I'm still waiting to get hold of an upgrade kit for my 390 but after using it on a 270x I'm pretty confident the performance will be good.

edit - I've had to lower myself to a cooler strapped to the side of my case while waiting so hopefully it won't be much longer wink.gif

Whatever. I am still very disappointed, and I will be contacting Aquaruning.se to return it for a full refund. Mostly on the grounds that it cracked and leaked, but I´m also unhappy with the performance in general.

The single 120mm rad AIO I had strapped to the card before investing in this performed better, and never jeopardized my system with any leaking.



Any help in making this an as speedy process as possible would be greatly appreciated, and would go a long way towards me doing business with AT in the future.
