Guys, I finally sold my r9 390... I bought it from the OP Agent Smith1984 himself.

I sold it locally for $80, to fund my $90 RX 480 Red Devil I bought from [H].

.....moment of silence.

Having some recurring problems with my R9 390 and wondering if anybody has any tips to try and fix it. Biggest problem is the random black screens and system crashes. Also under load it sounds like a shaken up & recently opened can of soda. Doesn't sound at all like the coil whine of other cards I've had.

Any ideas?

No I was very gentle when handling it. I would never hurt it, or even choke the card. Need to be careful with electronics.

Hey guys. I too bought a Strix 390x for cheap.

But bloody I think there's something wrong!! Everyone knows regardless of card it would only consume 20wattsish at idle but mine is confirmed 100watts!

I got a energy meter and with a gtx 1070 total consumption is 120watts idle.
With the 390x it's 240watts. When I game it's 700 watts!! I can bring it down to 450watts gaming by power limiting at - 50% in radeon software.

Like what the hells going on? 😮

Expected maybe 150watts idle and 350watts gaming not the +100watts either way with power limited lol..

Looks to be like the card really does draw 100 watts at idle. Found this, and it lists the MSI 390X as just under 100 watt minimum draw - https://www.tomshardware.com/reviews...0,4178-10.html

You're not wrong! but is it depending on the sample/card!?

Looking at multiple other sites like guru3d and kitguru the idle is more like 20 watts (or lets just say 50w max) but then mines a whopping 150watts at idle :O

even here https://bjorn3d.com/2015/07/asus-str...8gd5-gaming/5/ i thought at first from yours sounded right but all their other reviews are full system power. so again can't be 100w

Thinking should i flash a different lower variant bios to see how that goes. there's just something seriously wrong with max draw for card itself at 600w! (at the wall)

Hey, I can help.

I had two R9 290 Tri-X, and two R9 290 Vapor-X as well.

Windows 10 uses 3D more heavily, so it seems like maybe these don't clock down to 300/150MHz like in Windows 7. Check power plan maybe.

I would say that 100w would not be surprising, both Hawaii and Fiji are monster GPUs and use 300w-400w under load. I remember I had the two 290 Tri-X and a 5GHZ FX-8350 back in the day- I did see upwards of 900w power usage in games and 300 was probably the CPU.

If it functions and doesn't overheat, *shrug*
