If your monitor is really that bad it might be better to do it first and just run it at 1080p. Same performance, huge improvement on IQ.
Finding a good 1440p/144hz sample is also a problem. Unless you want to RMA a panel with IPS glow, try to get one from a brick and mortar store. If you don't have one I'd get a cheaper one with Adaptive Sync as the more pricy ones tend to have the worst binned panels somehow.

Of course you can still output to the new monitor but your GPU will be limiting the potential of that monitor. As long as you're aware of that, then by all means, get rid of that crap ASAP!

Agreed with the comment above. I still recommend you try super sampling to 1440p, if possible. It will give you the results of how much performance loss you will incur if you run native on the new 1440p display.
