Thermal pad for gpu - are these ok?

Hey guys, so I’m the proud new owner of a Vega 64 Strix with insanely bad vrm temps. Searching around tells me this is an all too common problem, and the recommended fox is thermal grizzly minus 8 pads.

Unfortunately I’m in Canada, and to get 3.0 mm pads (requisite for this fix) would cost me an ungodly amount on shipping. I also understand doubling up pads is not recommended.

As a result I’ve found these cheapies pada from Amazon Canada:

I just want to make sure these are non capacitive/ electrically conductive as it doesn’t say specifically.

Can I use these without frying my new card?

Generally no thermal pads are electrically conductive AFAIK (ignoring the "new" graphite pads).

Are you sure you need 3mm pads? That is an insane gap to fill with a pad. The thermal grizzly pads are made only up to 2mm I think. I'm also in Toronto and order Artic pads on prime

Do not cheap out on VRM thermal pad for Vega and also you cannot use 3mm thick thermal pads, dead sure about it. I'd go with Gelid Extreme 12W/mK 1mm thick, I had my experience with overclocked to the edge 290X with Kraken G10+X60 combo and I bought 3 different thermal pads only to settle down with Alphacool Eisschicht Light 1mm thick, rater 7W/mK and I still had my VRM on 88C with extra radiators on it. The pad you found offers only 5W/mK and looks identical to what EKWB offers, I've had their thermal pad as well and the result was almost 110C on VRM.

The thermal pad for vrm has been measured to be 3.0mm through various sources:

The issue is the supplied pad doesn’t make proper contact; too thin and doesn’t cover properly.

The arctic pads don’t come in 3.0 unfortunately, however they’re only 6w/mk @1.5 - so even if doubled up wouldn’t be that much more effective (potentially less so).

The thermal grizzly minus 8 3.0mm at 8w/mk is ideal - but again, shipping sucks.

I’m hoping with proper coverage it will at least improve somewhat - but I could be wrong. Is the difference between 6 and 8 that significant?

Damn, that is a horrendous design flaw. I'd probably shim that with copper. Besides that, can you carefully move the stock pad to better cover the VRMs for now?

For the weird stuff like this, I'd check out digikey too. I get my oddball thermal stuff from there.

What the hell, it's actually this thick, should we blame Asus for screwing up VRM cooling space on the cooling itself? The difference is 33% improved heat transfer capability between the pads but it'd need to be calculated to a difference between an uncooled VRM and a cooled one, which, obviously, is hard. It'd count it by looking at the reddit post like that: stock VRM temperature (115C) - temperature drop after the surgery (let's say 31C) = final temperature (84C). Now, if we wanted to use weaker thermal pad we'd need to multiply the temperature DROP by a ratio difference between two pads with 8W/mK as a base value (8/6=1.33), so having taken appropriate values previously, estimated value of final temperature after changing thermal pad to a 6W/mK would be 91C.


Disclaimer - I have literally no idea ho accurate it is.

How willing are you with a hacksaw? I'd epoxy thermal paste these onto the cooler, then use a 1mm thermal pad.
