Would thermal pads fix MSI 5700 XT Evoke?

I just regretfully bought the MSI 5700 XT Evoke (always bought sapphire and found them to have excellent quality)

I’ve seen the VRM VRAM temps and the thermal pads and was wondering if changing them out for bigger thermal pads would fix the issue. If I could return the card I would but 15% restocking with AUD is not fun

TLDR: Would thermal pads improve the temps to sapphire pulse levels and if so what height pads? If not time to sell this card

From what I've seen it's possible to fix the memory temp with a proper sized thermal pad. However since memory cooling is shared with GPU it's going to be hotter than Sapphire's solution.


VRM temps shouldn't be an issue, and if they are then it isn't fixable unless you lower power limit. the Onsemi powerstages used on the MSI Evoke are less efficient than the Sapphire's SiC620a.

Just live wit it and pad it if you must. MSI can make good efficient coolers but doesn't always put them on all the cards, and they make many various models to choose from, bad to good.

Pads? Usually 2mm thick. For backplate that's probably 3mm at least for my card. Looking at any heatsink and it's heatpipes you can easily guess how well it will cool with a bit of experience with various coolers on CPUs, GPUs, ...
On my MSI one would think that the 1/2 of heatsink over GPU is important... wrong, it only has 1 heatpipe going to it, the rest are soldered over die and most heat is taken by heatpipes to the 2nd half of heatsink. So that shared heatsinked half over die is more for the VRAM than spreading die heat into it.
The more heatpipes go into fins of heatsinks the better.

Pulse has 1 more heatpipe, a slightly bigger cooler and a nice VRAM and VRM plate that doesn't dump heat into main cooler. Better vents.

Those backplates do get hot when padded right. Pulse only pads VRMs. Evoke nothing, turning it into a heat trap.

Move the thermal pads to the center of the VRAM chips and as per Gamers Nexus will get better temps as the heat is more concentrated in the middle of the chips. He may even have measured the pads so you could get info on that as well if you feel the need to replace them.

Not just size but better thermal conductivity is what you need to look for. Normally, to bring cost down, these companies use 5-7 watt/mk. When i watercool my gpu i use Fujipoly with 11 watt/mk. It is not cheap. Take note of the thickness of original pads.

I wouldn't do that.

At stock position, the pad touches half-side of the RAM module, and full of the metal plate.
If he moves the pad to the center of the VRAM module, the thermal pad will touch half-middle of the RAM module and half of the metal plate. (half of thermal pad would be touching the air.

the problem is that the metal plate is only above half of 2 of the VRAM modules.

Let me just clear something here. For my recommendation, i was referring to the VRMs not the VRAM. VRAM do not suffer much from heat even with stock pads. The VRMs do. OP just gonna need a small amount of pads for the VRMs but i suggest have some extra.

Oooops, I did actually mean VRAMs not VRMs. I reviewed the Gamers Nexus video (two videos now) and he was talking about VRAM and the pads are 2mm thick.

no it is NOT! But it lasts forever, specially if you put those clay sheets into food saver vac storage.

I highly recommend anyone buying top tier pads to buy it in some sorta bulk. You'll thank me later.

if i remember correctly, they go even higher than 11, but it becomes stupidly expensive (the white tier)
