Cheapest AMD card for 4k video playback?

Hi all. I'm looking for the cheapest possible AMD card that can output 4k video. I'm not going to be using this card for gaming at all. It's only going to be used to run a 4k monitor, and maybe do some 4k streaming from Netflix. I also might play some 4k video files from time to time.

And if at all possible, it would be really nice if the card was passively cooled. If that isn't available I'll just go with one with a fan. From searching around, I've heard this:

The RX 550 is cheap and offers 4k functionality. There are probably even cheaper options from older generations, for example: AMD R7 3XX.

Well I'm looking for the cheapest, so which R7 3xx card would do the job?

I had used a RX 480 4Gb for quite a while and 4K60p youtube could not run without dropping frames. 24p & 30p could work if I OC:ed a little but it was dependent on the material if it would run trouble free.
Was only as of late with new updates to software it seemed to work in the last few months.

A RX 550 I can't see be issue free for you goal unless you get the Video decoding to work 100% issue free, but if decoding works any card should work, even APU/integrated graphics.
Hardware acceleration works and breaks at times with drivers or software updates and a RX 550 doesn't have the muscle to brute-force I would guess when the acceleration hardware isn't working.

Netflix support has specific requirement of supported hardware, make sure you have those. Decoding requirements of supported features to accelerate.

Thank you for the reply! Everyone seems to say the RX 550 should work fine. But some people say you really need the 560.

I am rocking the RX560 low profile in my HTPC. I will say, not a fan of AMD's HDR implementation but other than that not bad little card. I can even get some light to moderate gaming if you don't mind sliding the graphics to medium / low. If you need 4k netflix, as long as you have a Polaris or RX5XXX card with at least 4GB, you should be good. Just double check that it has Playready 3.0 support and you should be gucci.

You mentioned a low profile card... are you aware if there are any passively cooled cards that would do the job? Or maybe there's an aftermarket passive cooler? Might have to just make a thread about those in the cooling section.

I took the fans / shroud off of this: https://www.newegg.ca/msi-radeon-rx-...82E16814137425

I do have dual 80mm noctua's right next to the heatsink but I ran it for a bit forgetting to plug them in. So it can handle it but I wouldn't advise it for long term. It got pretty toasty. Maybe if there is really good airflow already might be a different story... the noctua's by not spinning, I'm sure weren't helping given the lack of airflow in my case (https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01...?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

As for official fanless LP models, sorry, I do not know of any.

undervolt it, you should be able to get away with it just fine without any fans as long as you're not pegging it @ 100% load 24/7

Probably an RX550 or GT1030. Both should have HDMI 2.0 for 4k 60hz.

For some reason, Nvidia nerfed the GT-1030 and it can't do 4k streaming. Someone said you need 4Gb of vram to do 4k well. Maybe that's the reason. IIRC those are 2Gb cards. But I'm going with AMD for this one, since I want the open source drivers.

hi all sorry to ask in here but i thought it would be better than making a new thread

which card would do all codec playback and support 4k60

the ati rx550 or RX560 ? there both 4gb cards but the rx550 is £39 and the RX560 is £59 so £20 more but i dont want anything more thatn a good card that will play all video back as i am not going to game on there.

I know they both support hdmi 2.0b and Playready 3.0 support but i dotn want to spend more than i need to, i am also looking into netflix and other streaming services in 4k and h264 playback as the system only has a i3 cpu.

thanks for any help
