HELP! My friend just put together a 3950x rig and it doesn't work

As I said a friend of mine not close friend but he got in touch with me that he built a X470 and 3950x CPU which I think he got from newegg, but I don't know if it is in stock now I doubt it is,,, he sorta got lucky. He installed everything and we went with skype to talk about this and fix it. The mobo is Gigabyte x470. He used Kryonaut like I told him to use and he got a DRP4 which is the size of a mini basketball lol.. No really no joke hehe. Anyhow he turns on his system and the fans start spinning and video card fans are spinning the system is quiet since the fans are not ramped up and what not. Then it shows Gigabyte Logo and it just shuts down. We are able to get a post to BIOS if were lucky. Everything is on default and what not. How should we begin the troubleshooting ? RAM sticks is the first action for situations like this ? Anyhow well do the RAM one stick at a time and see what happens. sighs

Sounds like the HSF isn't making proper contact with the CPU and it is hitting thermal limits. If I was to guess.

Otherwise, x470... maybe a bios flash to the latest is in order to support the 3950x.

Thank you sir, REP for you. I had him flash a BIOS but it was older prior to the 3950x hoopla. We will get the lateset BIOS update and update it one at a time until we get to last BIOS and see what happens. Also you are right it might be the contact ,, this is his 2nd PC build of his life. He lives far so I will have to just skype with him and tell him the things you said. Thank you, will report back. I think there are 2 new BIOSes for his board and I bet your right for 3900x its ok but not for 3950x. Once we finish with BIOS flashing one version at a time then we will see whats up. If it happens again Im gonna have him reseat his DRP4 and use the right ammount of paste. I learned about Kryonaut recently we will use that. I will tell him to screw it on tight but not tight enough to chip the motherboard. I think your on to something my friend, hopefully well sort things out. Also he is a bit of slow person and he has seizures and is not a retard but suffers daily and he tells me my only joy is when Im online and playing with others war games or whatever and surfing. Will report back thx my friend.

You can also try running Memtest86 should you still have issues after that to weed out the ram (its 64 bit app now so it goes past 4 gigs and tests all avail) Also try another PSU as i had some goofy issues with one where it was doing the same. Use a known good one if possible.

If it's not a new Max edition board then the x470 does not have the right bios to boot it as I used a 2200g to boot my MSI X470x Gaming Pro to get the bios updated for my 3700x .. also I need to recheck myself as the 3950x may have a newer bios then mine which is AGESA 1004 Beta b

Ryzen 5 3600
Gigabyte AB350M-DS3H CF
G-SKill 16Gb
Red Dragon RX 570 8Gb

R.I.P. Zawarudo, may you OC angels' wings in heaven.
If something appears too good to be true, it probably is.
Best R0ach Quote of all time : TLDR: Haswell might be the last legit gaming platform unless mice get their own non-USB interface on some newer architecture.
