I recently got 8th place in the Heaven top 30 thread (at 274 fps), with my CPU @ 4475MHz on the first Core Complex, memory at 3800MHz/1900 fclk and my 1080tis @ 2025/5899 with Kboost on in Precision XOC, stock voltage, 100% fan and side panel/fan filters off. I'm trying to beat that 279 fps and get it as high as possible to beat some people at Heaven

My cards are 6696 models and my BIOS is 86.02.39.01.90 (from around March 2018), with no power limit issues (as I can see 127% power usage on both cards in say, looped Fire Strike Ultra combined test). Both are on the slave BIOS. These cards have always overclocked like crap on the core and I don't think it's heat related, if I try and raise both to 2037MHz and max out the voltage, most benches crash to black screen before they can even heat up, and I have to hard reset my rig (hold the power button).

In this situation, should I try to flash the EVGA K|NGP|IN bios and possibly shunt mod? Or since the pair is crashing instantly on raising the core frequency (at like 40c top/35c bottom) within a second or two, will this not make a difference because it's not power related? Should I try flashing the BIOS from this thread?

Should I also regress drivers to 390.xx if I can on Win10 Pro 1903? (These were the best performing drivers before RTX dropped)

I want to redo every bench I did on HWBOT with my 1080tis, multi-gpu and single, now that I get a huge boost to overall score because my physics score is like 35k with this new CPU + memory, but want to get my core OC higher if possible

Any advice appreciated. Thanks
Not sure you want to run XOC BIOS without full waterblocks and backplates. You'll very better clicks but will thermal throttle for sure, and your are risking damaging your cards.

Edit: You might want to try the FTW3 Kingpin Fix Bios in the best bios collection zip file in op though, might do better.

Yeah I have the Kingpin Fix bios, that's what I meant when I said Kingpin bios. But on the EVGA forums it seemed like people were mostly using it on my cards when it had power limit issues they couldn't fix, that I've never had (stuck at 117% even on the slave bios)

Regarding XOC bios, point noted, I have actually been considering selling some retro games I don't play and other stuff to put together a full loop. However, since my cards are custom it seems the only blocks available are EK nickel full cover and they are still selling for $160 a piece. I dont want to spend money watercooling cards that will probably be replaced in 2-3 years, and are almost 3 years old anyway.

But yeah I'm already hitting 70c or so on the top card and 55c on the bottom with both at 127% power limit/90c temp limit/no additional voltage- 2025/5899MHz in Valley, Heaven, Superposition, Fire Strike Ultra, etc. benches. With all of my case fans on full blast, both card fans at 100% and my front and top fan filters off and side panel off.

So you're right it is probably dangerous and will add too much heat under benching loads, especially if I am able to run higher frequency on the core, which will add heat as well. Even with my new CPU/board/RAM setup I've tested my rig with a Kill-a-watt meter and I'm only pulling 850w at the wall max (In Fire Strike Ultra combined test looped), my power supply does it no problem- but heat is the issue. Especially since my cooling is less than adequate for the CPU as well, which runs around 80C under full load

Alright then. I won't attempt to flash them or run them at higher core, (since it crashes anyway), and will continue to work on my CPU and memory OC (especially timings) since RAM makes a huge difference on Ryzen 3000, and see if I can get some more fps in Heaven that way. Thanks

I just wanted to add a comment here to you and to anyone that finds your post in the future in this thread: Yes as said above the XOC bios for 1080 Ti's is -ONLY- designed for temporary use for competitive overclocking with liquid nitrogen. It does have no power limit, but at the same time it will hard reset the nvidia driver if your card ever reaches or exceeds 65c in core temps. It's designed for being run at -50c or colder at all times. Also you can take it from someone that ran their 1080 Ti @ 1.200v for 17 months: It will degrade your card. I can't run XOC at those volts any more. I had to revert to stock bios only and deal with a power limit now.

I'm not surprised at this given that Heaven at 1080p depends more on cpu. I am just really thrilled with my upgrade given that I upgraded from a 4790k from SiliconLottery delidded and binned to 4.8GHz. I honestly didn't expect to be anywhere near competitive with a 9900k at 1080p benches or games- as in certain titles @ 1080p the 9900k gets +70-80 fps against my chip. I game at 5760x1080 still, and at that res, I am GPU bound and the 9900k and R9 3900x are about even.

What I'm saying is that I gained gaming performance in both either way, the 4790k was long in the tooth, and I fully expected it to run the same or slightly better at Surround res and honestly expected it to be worse 1080p and especially benches like Heaven, and thought it would be much worse than a 9900k. It's not.

For that run, my chip was at 4475/4450/4200/4200MHz, memory was 3800 c16, and the cards were barely at 2012MHz/5940MHz... what was your 9900k and GPUs at? Sig clocks?

Anyway... also thanks to the other person who explained the XOC bios and 65C thermal shutoff, glad I came here and asked first or they'd basically be unusable because of that. Glad I left them alone

Thanks
Best run. Try overclocking your memory and use custom curves in Afterburner, CTRL F, max out your CPU clocks and memory at 1093v.

I don't have Fire Strike on hand; can't find the screenshot. I'll rerun it tomorrow. It was just a hair over 36k, something like 36081. Cinebench was 7700+, I'll post the screenshot later.

Thats a great Heaven score. Submit it if you didn't. You are also within 10 fps of the best 2080ti SLI submission.

My cards core clocks won't do much more than that, even with added voltage, which adds heat. The memory on either doesn't go much higher than +425 and going higher reduces fps. Also, I do all benches with both cards fans at 100%. The top one will pass 70c in Heaven, bottom will hang around 55c. Unless I open a window, its already near freezing this time of year where I live.
The heat is ok though because in games it is rare for either card to exceed 60c even with a fan curve, I use vsync and frame rate limiting.

If I could run all cores of my chip at 5ghz, I'd be much closer, to your scores, but I knew that going in. I'd be interested to see FS Ultra as that is far less cpu dependent. Mine was a little more than 14k.
