i have 2070 super windforce oc (old) and just bought the 2070 super gaming oc 3x (new).
the gaming oc 3x heatsink design is almost almost the same as windforce oc, they both got 6 heatpipes with exactly the same distribution.
but the gaming oc 3x becomes more thicker on heatsink. also the windforce oc got ~78mm fans, and the gaming oc 3x got ~83mm fans.
so the gaming oc 3x has slightly larger fan size and much more thicker heatsink, while having the same heatsink design in terms of fin stack (3 parts) and heatpipe distributon (4+2+4 from left to right) and the same amount of 6 heatpipes in total.
so how important is the thickness of the heatsink, especially when it comes to ~250w (which is the 80TI level in the past).
official sites shows more details of the heatsink designs of these 2070 supers:
2070 SUPERâ„¢ WINDFORCE 8G; GV-N207SWF3-8GC; L=280.35 W=116.45 H=40.24 mm
2070 SUPERâ„¢ GAMING OC 3X 8G; GV-N207SGAMING OC-8GD; L=286.5 W=114.5 H=50.2 mm
i ran some furmark, locked the power limit to 240w, to see the differences of cooling performace in terms of gpu temperature and fans rpm.
this is WINDFORCE 8G (< 2 SLOTS)
the auto temp and rpm are 75c @ 2250rpm.
for ~400 rpm more or less, it resuts in ~5c differentials. but going even further lower to 1400rpm would then be hitting the temperature limit of 88c.
this is gaming oc 3x (>2 slots)
the auto temp and rpm are 69c @ 1875rpm. for ~400 rpm more at 2230rpm the temp is 64c and 400rpm more at 2650rpm is 62c only.
this one gives users more room to lower the fan speed until hitting the temp limit (85c @ 1000rpm).
so, thicker heatsink design matters and seems to be very important on high power consumption (>200W).
and that gives us a very clear hint about how good could the windforce oc 3x be!
the windforce oc 3x (GV-N207SWF3OC-8GD) could be the cooling king among the entry level of 2070 supers.
this baby has 1 heatpipe cut (affecting the middle part of the 3 finstacks), but got the same gaming oc 3x's heatsink thickness and fan sizes.
windforce oc (old) is <2 slots; 6 heatpipes; ~78mm fan.
windforce oc 3x (new) is >2 slots; 5 heatpipes; ~83mm fan.
the above tests are run inside p600s with case fans and cpu fans maxed out. the p600s's top and front metal covers are used.
