970 > SLI 780 in DOOM (2016)?

To cut a long story short: Both my 2x SLI GTX 780 setup and my GTX 970 average ~60 FPS at 1440p Ultra, but the 970 1% and 0.1% values are *much* closer: 50fps for 1% vs ~29fps for 1% on the dual 780's. Both tests were done in OpenGL 4.5.

What's the deal here?

Sort of a natural effect of SLI, the average will be good but the 1% and 0.1% will be lower. Something to do with communication between the cards having some degree of lag, or something like that

3g or 6gb 780, what resolution

i'm sure the sli would win out at some point, but 90% of the time the 970s the go to.

sli is also just so damn dead outside of a few titles.

3 GB, at 1440p

The games I play are Battlefield 4, Doom, and Cities: Skylines, all of which support SLI.

Battlefield 4 Crossfire support is horrendous, I'd have imagined SLI support would be the same. When I was big into BF4 I had a crossfire 7870s and I had to disable CF before I played due to massive frame time issues and stutter.

i remember testing BF4 with my titans + 3930k n it always being a stutter fest, idk. I was basically done with fast fps by then so I don't think I did much tweaking.

doom will fly though its one of those rare titles with decent scaling and handling. I've seen decent proof of proper scaling in cities as well, like he said.

I did a Fraps benchmark on a hopefully-somewhat-consistant 60 second arcade run.

780 SLI:
AVG: 61fps
1%: 29fps

970:
AVG: 60fps
1%: 50fps

I don't recall the 0.1%, but it followed the same slope.

Now I'm thinking I should just get a second 970...

Cities is heavily CPU-bound, but I run 200% resolution for super sampling AA, and SLI scales that beautifully.

Doom scales very well, too. With only 1 780 running I hover a bit above 30-40 FPS, with both I over a bit over 60-70 FPS.

My experience was similar on Cities

Stick with 780 SLI, it is worth it for the extra 1.6% FPS, also looks cooler
