A GTX 465 would be more than plenty to max out a lot of games with decent AA/AF settings at your resolution. With the ability to unlock a 465 to a 470 (assuming you can get an unlockable one) you'll get even more performance for less $$$.

most 465 cores are not ulockable because they are cut off by laser. getting a 465 is really like getting a 285 with dx11

good point. the 470 should last a long time at that res.

That's why I said IF he gets one that is unlockable. There are many threads here on OCN if one searched for them about which GTX 465 brands are available that are unlockable. If you get one with all 10 memory chips, it's unlockable.
