Gigabyte Vega 64 Gaming OC 8G - Crossfire Unstable
I have 2X Vega64 crossfire setup in a mid-tower case with 1800X CPU, all running at stock speeds. The cards are Gigabyte Vega64 8GB OC two-fan models. At 4k ultra settings on full load, the system becomes unstable and BSODs or freezes and needs to be hard-reset. Earlier I used 2X R9 290 Sapphire Tri-X OC cards in the same case and with the same CPU, but they were very stable even at full load. Ofc, the R9 290s in crossfire were only pushing 2560x1440 at high settings, but even so.
Anyway, the Vega64 cards in crossfire were heating up to 85*C on full load at 4K 60fps constant on ultra settings and the case temps were at 47-50*C. Assuming the inside of the case was overheating and causing the cards to freeze, I ramped up the fan speeds on all the case fans and also on the graphics cards until the fan noise is just below un-bearable. This reduced case temps to about 40-42*C and graphics card temps to about 60-65*C. However, even now on 4k ultra settings at full load the system still freezes and needs a hard reset after some time of gaming.
So with the case and cards not as hot as before, what could be causing the freezing? I am not OC'ing anything yet, the CPU and graphics cards are at stock speeds, the RAM is at 3200MHz with stable timings and tested to some extent. Everything points to the graphics cards freezing / locking up. So what can I do to make the situation better?
As a point of reference, I tested each card separately and they work fine and don't freeze up. Only when I run them at 4k ultra in crossfire, they freeze up and need to be hard reset. Any advice / help appreciated. Thank you for reading.
