PCIe 40 lane CPU's: all PCIe x16 slots the same?

If you have a CPU that supports 40 PCIe lanes does it make any difference which 16 lane PCIe slot you put a 16 lane PCIe video card in? Do you get any more performance by putting the graphics card in a slot closer to the CPU rather than farther away?

As long as it's true 16 lanes on motherboard - then no.

Nah. You have physical PCIe lanes, and each lane has electrically wired for a certain amount of lanes. So, you can have an x16 lane wired to x8 or something. Some boards have a bottom fullsize x16 slot, but is electrically wired to x4. Just depends on the motherboard.

Oh yeah, and then you have some x4 and x8 physical slots, but the end of the slot is open so you can fit longer slots in it. You also have some PCIe devices that use a full x16 slot, but only have traces for x4 or x8 of them. So yeah, PCIe is a pretty flexible interface.
