How limiting is this old hardware for a new GPU?

Hi everyone,

So this week I plan to finally upgrade my GPU, but I am still slightly torn on which one. I found a lovely deal on an RTX 2070, however the 1660 Ti fits the budget a tiny bit better (accounting for the fact that the rest of my hardware needs to be updated as well). Something like the 2070 or even a 2060 is tempting, however I am concerned that I won't see any kind of benefit from one of those cards compared to a 1660 so long as the rest of my hardware remains out of date. Am I actually going to be limited in this way or am I overthinking this? Old hardware is listed in my sig rig.

Thank you :3

Well, from someone that used a X58 with Xeon W3690 CPU with 1080, 1080Ti & 2080, there was performance gains with each GPU, and there was some CPU limitation when compared to moving them into newer systems, but I don't think your going to see that much limitation with your current setup. If you found a deal on a 2070, I would go for it.

Just as a note the RTX Super cards are just around the corner so some of the RTX cards are getting replaced and/or getting a price drop so it would be a bad idea to buy anything right now

After looking at the Super cards, I was debating if I could get away with just buying a nice RTX card and leaving the rest for now. When playing my usual games, my GPU usage is pegged at maximum but my CPU sits at 40 ish percent usage during games. So this makes me wonder if upgrading the rest is necessary at this time?

If nothing you play uses more than 4 threads then no, but chances are the reason you're only seeing 40% max CPU utilization is because you have a GPU bottleneck. It's very difficult to find a game that doesn't scale with at least 4 threads nowadays.

Intel i9 9900K Coffee Lake @ X8 5309mhz (+47.5%)

My opinion would be to upgrade the GPU first, as that will surely get you a good boost in FPS. Down the line, if necessary, you can then upgrade your CPU / mobo.

The CPU will only hold you back a lot if you're trying to push a high frame rate like 120, 144, etc. If you're playing at 60Hz~ then it should be fine.

Oh so the CPU may be compensating for the GPU right now then? So if I were to put in a nice GPU, I likely would see a reduction in CPU load?

With a better card, your CPU load would increase. Right now your CPU is stuck at 40% because the card is holding it back.

Maybe I am not understanding correctly. but wouldn't higher CPU load during gaming be a bad thing? I would've expected CPU load to decrease with a better GPU, therefore telling me I need a new CPU if the CPU load maxes out all the time.

Dont waste time going RTX. Every RTX card will be bottleneck by this CPU.

I have a 2500K OCed to 4.1GHz & using a 1660Ti now on 1080p144Hz display. I even have the same motherboard you own.

1660Ti is the highest you should go for this kind of old PC. Anything faster is wasting money.
