How Can I Learn About GPU's? Also Will My R9 290 Run 4 Monitors?

Greetings All,

FIRSTLY - I'd like to think I am tech savvy, but man if I can't understand Video Cards. There are 2 camps right? AMD and NVIDIA? Are they like INTEL v/s ADM or something? How about the Models, thats really what I don't get? Seems some are in the hundreds and others in the thousands?

Take for example, my Asus R9 290, what exactly is it? Is it AMD or Nvidia? What is its equivalent on the other side(whatever side that is? )

SECONDLY - current setup is an i7-2600 RUNNING dual GTX 260's in SLI mode. Am I just able to throw the R9 290 in place of the dual 260's and call it a day?

i.e. will my current rig run the r9 290?

THIRDLY - Can the R9 290 run four monitors?

FOURTHLY - I have 6 monitors(Dell P2217H), they have have DP, VGA, HDMI outputs. I also have 2 monitors(Dell P2213T) which has a DP, VGA, DVI outputs. Since the R9 290 has 1 DP, 1 HDMI, 2x DVI, looks like I would have to use 2 monitor models of each right, that is if it can run 4 monitors doing it that way I don't have to use adapters right?

HOPING to learn more about GPU's for a dream build but meanwhile hoping to live out a bucket list dream of having 4 monitors in the crib..

thank you all in advance!

oNe

*edit* fourthly was not a brag, the spacing was off so the ? was lost

do you know a Ford GT40 is faster than a VW Type 4 because 40 is 36 higher than 4 or do you know GT40 is faster because you know what a GT40 is and you know what a Type 4 is and one clearly outperforms the other?

The numbers in the product name don't mean anything, they're just a name.

why wouldn't it? if the motherboard has a PCI-E slot you can shove whatever PCI-E GPU you want into it.

as long as you're not trying to drive 4K monitors on DVI or something dumb, 4 outputs = 4 monitors
