What happened to the GPU market?

Back in December 2017, I bought a GTX 1080ti, a gigabyte triple fan model for $680. 3 years later, $680 would get me a side grade at best. And now the XX80ti models are GTX Titan price. Anyone knowledgeable about this kinda stuff explain to me what's going on here?

At what point will it be viable to upgrade this 1080ti? Look, it's not about the money, I could buy a 2080ti right now, but I'm belligerent to the idea, because I know for a fact I'd be getting fleeced by paying $1200 in 2020 for a GPU that's a 30% upgrade over the one I paid $680 for 3 years ago....

I'm looking at upgrading my Ryzen 5 1600x chipset as soon as the new Ryzen 4 series drops, and I'm probably just gonna slap my 1080ti in it, because I can't beat it for $680. This will be the first time I've ever reused a GPU in a new rig.

Nvidia has a monopoly and they realized they could basically charge whatever price and people would cave in.

Is AMD releasing anything competitive this year that might be an upgrade for a 1080ti?

I was quite happy with the performance of my Ryzen 5 1600x, and have no plans to buy another Intel CPU any time soon. If AMD starts releasing solid GPUs again, I'd start buying them and never look back.

I wouldn't hold your breath. AMD hasn't been relevant in the high-end GPU market in nearly a decade now.

Don't be surprised if you see 3080ti's going for $1500 USD

There are a few things happened;

Moore's Law has slowed down GPU advancements

AMD fell too far behind to catch up for a while so they choose to focus mostly on manufacturing the PS4 and Xbox hardware. They still have not caught up but hopefully RDNA2 will change that.

Bitcoin mining.

Crypto mining was at its peak in Q4 of 2017. When nvidia launched the 2000 series it was already at its downturn so technically mining wasn't a driving factor. Corporate greed and pleasing shareholders will always be the priority.

AMD needs to get their act together before it gets out of hand.

Yeah, I remember I got my 1080ti like a week before the prices skyrocketed. I could have sold it for $1000, but I decided to keep it. This didn't last though, and the bitcoin excuse doesn't hold up into 2020.

I'm kinda hoping AMD pulls a "Ryzen" with their GPUs, and sticks it to Nvidia the same way they did to Intel in the CPU market. Because $1200 for a XX80ti is just robbery.

What about Intel? Intel is poised to enter the discrete GPU game sometime later this year.

Mining is definitely a factor. Just because we're no where near the peak, that does not mean gpu prices aren't still affected by it because they absolutely are.
